I pulled the head off my d16y8 that had a knock, how do I inspect the head for damage?
I junked the block, I dont see any marks on the bottom of the head from the pistons hitting it. how do I check for valve damage and such?

Only real way to check for a bent valves is to remove them all. Then rool them on a flat metal table. Look at the shank if it wobbels theres a problem. If it rolls smoothe your good. Kinda like checking a pool cue.
so that means I gotta pull alot ****, right and buy some new tools to compress the springs?

Its gonna be hard to tell cause if there bent they will get pulled back into place. Was there any contact to the pistons? You can also take a flashlight and point it into the ports, if you see a small ring of light around any of the valves then there bent.

instead of spending $200 on tools it might be easier to take the head to your local machine shop, have them clean and inspect it and give it a valve job and face the valves-then you will know for sure everything is ok, no second guessing.
