97 R owners...
Has anyone else had the following problems:
1) Ignition, in particular, igniter problems?
2) The bolt that holds the rotor on the distributor shaft coming loose, or off completely?
I am trying to ascertain if there are other people that have experienced these problems. Any input here would be greatly appreciated.

I had the little screw that holds rotors to the shaft come off my 00 ITR and imbed itself inside the cap, the rotor was spinning freely and bending and scrapping everything inside the cap. It happened as I was leaving a track event at Gingerman, I thought the Engine was damaged, because I thought it was the same noise I heard 2 years earlier in my 98 when leaving the same track (when I did Have bent #3 rod and wasted #4 bearing) I "listened" my way around the engine compartment until I realized it was ths spark arcing inside the cap making a loud ticking noise. I straightend everything and reinstalled it, drove 160+ miles home and the dealer covered it under warranty the next day.

I guess "spinning freely" was not the correct term, more like spinning loosely on the shaft, basically moving around freely, for & aft while still spinning with the motor.

And then: BANG!!! All hell breaks loose and yer in the hole 3000 plus dollars.
Ahhh, the joy.
Just as a side note, that picture I sent you Steve... well, the old, buggered housing/shaft allowed for 8-12 degrees of radial movement while the rotor was attached to the shaft. It was pretty freaky that something that was designed to operate at such high rpm would have that much play in it.

The igniter went bad on my distributor in the 00 R and the dealer replaced it under warranty. My friend with a highly modded LS has the same re-ocurring problem with the screw coming lose on the shaft. He loctited it and it lasted a few months. But I guess those off the rev limiter shifts and burnouts contribute to the problem as well. Since he drags his car quite often.
I didn't leave the screw loose; it still came off. In fact, it was loctited down. Go figure.
The first time my igniter went, the cap had never been off.
The other thing to look for is machining differences in the distributor shaft; the top is machined down slightly more than the bottom (below the rotor) of the shaft.
I have a photo demonstrating this, but no way to post it.
Help anyone?
