Default Bad Motor Mount? - How Do You Tell?

Ok, I have a "click" (just one, not a series of clicks like a CVJ) that seems to be associated with movement of the engine. The rubber on the Left Lower (in front of crank pulley) seems VERY spongey.

How can you tell if it's bad?

It's hard to tell if it's torn. The mount in question does not lend itself to close inspection. The rubber sells for about $30... I hate doing the "replace parts until the problem goes away" method...

I was thinking the "click" was a CVJ, but like I mentioned, it is a single click that I hear whenever the engine is rocking back and forth. Additionally, I'm seeing a rub mark on the inside of the hood right above the distributor housing.

When does the one click occur??

I used to have a click right after shifting. about 9 months after that, my clutch crapped out on me(and it really did crap on me went from grabbing like a champ to chattering and slipping overnight) After replacing my clutch, the click is gone.

I always though the click had to do with my brakes or something from the change in torque when shifting but I guess I was wrong. It never bothered me but I'm glad its gone now.

I'm pretty sure it's not the clutch, since it'll click with the clutch engaged and doesn't do it every time the clutch goes in or out. Now, on load (like, right after engaging the clutch, where the engine would be moving, eh?) it clicks. The clutch is 14k old and I don't beat it too hard...

Ok, yes... the distributor... how much clearance is it supposed to have? So, there is a mark on the underside of my stock hood right where the distributor would be. If the engine is rocking an excessive amount, could it rub the hood?

Needless to say, this is frelling with me in a big way.

put e-brake on. start car and put in first gear, slowly let go of pedal til the car is crawling forward w/ e-brake engaged. if motor shakes, you've got a mount problem.

that's the way i was told.

that's what i did. have someone try to move the car in first while you watch your motor torque back and forth. when i tried this, my motor moved like 3 inches back and forth... . i installed some motor mount inserts and the motor moves very little now.

I had that click. After about a year it has multiplied to sometimes 3 or 4 clicks in a row, very close together. And I have inserts in all my mounts, the engine doesn't move a bit. If anyone can solve this clicking puzzle I would love you.

Pooface: Did you check the CV boots for wear? Did you try re-tightening all the mounts?

The acceleration isn't as crisp. More shaking in the engine. Vibrates at low speeds.

yup and yup. I suspected my diff for a while, but it seems to work great so....? I'm sort of at the point of waiting for something to break so I know what it is.

Visually inspect or take them off individually and inspect. All are relatively easy except the rear mount which takes a little work, just remember to support the engine or tranny when (if) you remove them

I'd say the rear could be a culprit (mine was cracked 3/4 of way and allowed lots of engine rock). Couldn't see damage until it was removed. Others were cracked and dry rotting, but still functioning correctly before I replaced them.
