HELP Will a jdm gsr motor...
Don't think so. The motor did not meet the standards in the car it's from. If the car is a GSR, they would probably not look too closely, but as a swap, my understanding is they will look. Everything I see says they know what to look for in a legal swap. Starting with a motor that did not originally meet the Cali standards could be tough.
I'm on the east coast not west, but everything I see says it's going to be difficult if not impossible. Before you put the time and money into it, I would recommend contacting the people who would have to certify the car. Be specific, tell them what you want to do, make sure they understand you want to be legal and see what they say. Ultimately, they are the ones who will give you the yay or nay, so might as well start there.

My guess was that the sensors, cat, computer, (anything else?) would have to be the US spec. I think the only internal difference is a slightly higher compression, but can that be proven to them? You have to meet the spec on whichever is newer, the motor or car. With the assorted parts you will need, will the JDM motor end up cheaper than a US legal one?
All the assorted emissions stuff has to be the parts certified for US use, even if it's the same part except for a number or stamp.

I ahve got a 95 eg hatch w/ a 95 jdm gsr. It runs perfectly. completley stock. no mods done to engine. It does have slightly higher comp than usdm.
And BTW, what are the ways so make it legal? I really need to get this thing smogged!!!

I still think you are best off talking to the people who will pass or fail your car. They know absolutely what they will accept. Explain exactly what you have and that you want to make it legal. My guess is that if it can be, they will tell you exactly what they want to see.
The motor will PASS SMOG as long as you use all USDM parts such as the ECU , intake manifold and all sensors, cat . It has been done and proven.

Yes it's smog legal as long as you make sure to put all the correct smog devices that came with the car in the u.s. It's considered an engine replacement...not an engine CHANGE. They go by the engine number (b18XX). If the engine number was never used in the U.S. then you can't use it. You can not put an older engine into a newer chassis. You can't change your engine to a different model UNLESS the model was offered (factory option or watever) in the same chassis for the same year. Once you do the change, you have to take it to the State Referee for inspection so you get the CARB sticker which legalizes your setup.
As long as you have the CARB stickers with E.O. numbers for everything in your engine bay then you're pretty much street legal.

u need that sticker to be legal...
what u need to do is call your local smog shop....
ask the number for the state referee....
call the number to make an appointment....
now you need to make sure you have a usdm header, usdm ecu same year as your motor, and make sure your smog stuff is hooked up exactly as that sticker under your hood.....there is also a little evap purge valve that needs to be transfered over from your old motor...because the jdm counterpart dosen't have it...
lastly after u are able to pass visual, you need to pass the emisssions part....
oh yeah make sure u do not have any codes stored in your ecu and that your timing is 16 +- 2.... they will automatically fail you if you have any of these...
