I got my engine running and i can here some valve tap at idle (800) and it gets even worse as i rev. I am running a zdyne ecu and i have a very conservative tune in there, i have also retarded my timing all the way and with the timing light i am at 16 BTDC. this engine was reciently rebuilt, could the valves not be adjusted properly? thanks guys

 

Yeah it's the valve clearances. You're going to need to tighten the clearances.

 

More than likely the valves need a little tightening.....if that doesnt fix it, possibly you are hearing a fubarred bearing in the block.

 

is it bad for my engine to run with valve tap or more of an annoyance? by the way i am boosting to about 10psi (not yet) as soon as the motor is running good.

 

I would adjust the valves then see what it does... Are there new rings in there? Did you have to break em in?

yeah, new rings........any pointers on breaking in the rings. i hear there is the take it slow method and the "beat the **** out of it" method. which would you go with?

thanks i really appreciate it......i just read the motoman's explaination...i think i'll go with that method. and i guess the boost will help seat the rings.

 

i heard it could also be the lost motion control tapping. anyone else heard of something like this in a mini me. thanks
