well i did a compression test on my friends b18c1 hatch and things didnt go how he wanted... numbers are as follows

4 230
3 60
2 60
1 220

now we knew something wasnt right. so i poured about a capful of oil in the 2 and 3 cyl and did compression again.. both came out around 220 and 230 ... what does this mean, i cant remember exactly but doesnt that mean he has bad rings?> or what is it?

Either that or bad head gasket, too.

 

yeah, getting higher numbers like that after adding oil is an indicator of bad rings.

 

so how can i tell if its bad rings or head gasket.... whats a good way to figure it out so we can figure out what needs to be replaced?

 

is it leaking oil? coolant? or a mixture of both? if it is then it is a bad head gasket otherwise it's his rings....oh and I thought I had bad compression!!!

 

If it is the rings you might as well build the bottow with some better pistons.

 

Replacing the head gasket is relatively inexpensive in comparison to re-ringing "ALL" four cylinders (cannot just rering two) -

Just replace the head gasket - do the compression test again - if the numbers remain - you know the rings are gone - if they equalize then you are good to go..

 

While you've got the head off, you might as well replace the rings. It's not expensive to get a whole new set of rings, and you can still do it with the engine in the car.

If you just replace the HG, and then you still have the problem, you'll hav eo pull the head all over again, and still put on a new headgasket. Definitely replace both at the same time.

BTW, I'll bet its definitely your rings.

if it's either the car should smoke some... probobly a little whiter looking if it's the head gasket...

I'd do a leakdown test... try putting a little oil in each cylinder before doing so that way if it's the HG then the oil will be forced into mixing with the coolant... otherwise you're pretty safe in saying it's the rings.
