Default Power steering pump removal question.

I've been running without power steering now for more than a year. Currently just have the belt removed. I know there are the fancy ways to do the manual rack setup but mine doesn't involve that. It feels fine like it is now and I'm use to it. My question is can I just cut the hose running to the pump and cap it off so that I can remove the pump and fluid resivour for weight savings? Of course the fancier looping hose setups would probably make steering a little easier but I've been fine with the way it is and it doesn't bother me unless the car is under 2mph so all I'm really looking for is a way to clear up some engine bay space and take some weight off the nose. Thanks.

i think you can but fluid might shoot out when moving the rack. i think you still need
to do that loop thing. i dont know, try it out with the hoses jus off and turn the wheel
and see what happens.

I removed the pump and all lines, then installed a barb fitting on the rack. I looped the rack without a breather and the steering feels great.

The fitting cost under a dollar from Home Depot and the loop was ~$10 (I don't remember the exact amount). It is the best bang for the buck modification that I have made.

Here's what I did:
1. Remove all fluid from system (let pump pump out fluid into a closed container) leaving a little bit to lubricate the system.
2. Remove Pump and cast iron brackets (9.5 lbs)
3. Hook PS line that used to go to pump up to the bottom nipple of the fluid reservoir (sp?).
4. Leave the line that goes to the cooler in the front of the car also hooked to the reservoir.
5. Drive away knowing you are making as much as 7 more whp w/out power steering:

There you have it - a vented manual steering system using all the OEM parts (and you can go back to assisted steering anytime you want). I will post some pics of the setup when I get time to take some...

Wasn't there someone that was putting together a kit with the reservoir and all necessary hoses for the ps removal? I just tried doing a search but couldn't find anything about it.

I removed my power steering crap and attempted to fit a barb on there with a hose but i got the wrong size and all the fluid leaked out.

My steering is hard as fawk, but oh well, my arms are bigger now

After looking at it more closely today this is exactly what I planned to do. I know there are a few huge posts on making a setup using other parts to mimic setups such as Realtime. However I'm not really interested in them right now since I've been fine with the belt off. I just wanted the best way to remove the pump weight with the least amount of modification. I'll consider the more advance methods later on.

Thanks for the info Philly_NBR_R

No Problem
I'll try to get some pics for you guys soon...

One last thing - MAKE SURE YOU DRAIN THE FLUID!!! The damn system is hard as fawk to turn if you don't (this should be fairly obvious )

I just finished test drive my car in the twisty after I removed the power steering belt last night. All I can say is I'll put the belt back on right after I get home from work. The mod took away the "razor sharp" respond which I like so much in the Type R. I would imagine this mod will really benefit a rear wheel drive car not a front drive one.

I think the power steering removal mod is supposed to give a similar steering feel to the regular power steering setup. I haven't driven a car yet with the mod properly done (steering rack lines looped), but a couple of people have reported back that it feels much better than simply removing the belt.
