46,000 miles, 2 Clutch Replacement Under Warranty...a Possible 3rd Coming Up. WTF?
The same symptom that prompted the dealer to replace my clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing/flywheel twice is back again.
- With 16,000miles, I brought it in the first time because everytime I would release the clutch pedal, right at the point of clutch engagement, it would make this clicking/clunk noise. Another noise I was hearing was when pressing on the clutch pedal, the first 2 inches of pedal travel would produce this friction-like noise. The same noise was present when letting go of the clutch and starting 2 inches before my foot was off the clutch pedal. As Soup **** described it, the noise resembled that of an ice-skater skating on ice. The verdict was that one of the springs on the clutch broke and the throwout bearing was bad so they replaced the clutch, PP, T/O bearing...I don't remember if they replaced the flywheel too.
- The 2nd time around, with 36,000 miles, my clutch pedal was producing this squeaking noise throughout most of the pedal travel when pushing the pedal in. I thought I just needed it lube but it turns out that my throwout bearing was bad so they replaced everything including the flywheel!
Now with 46,000 miles, that friction-like noise is back and the squeaking pedal comes and goes. I'm starting to think that they didn't even replace anything the previous two times I've been in for warranty work. From my understanding, the friction-like noise I'm hearing is due to a bad throwout bearing. How the hell does a throwout bearing go bad? Can it be caused by the driver? I drive my car hard sometimes but I've never drag-launched it so I'm not sure what's going on.
I'm really wondering what makes a t/o bearing go bad.

bearings can go bad. Maybe they used the same bearning when they did the warranty work.
I had mine replaced under warranty at 18,000 miles...I wasn't too happy.
The springs broke on mine...At the time, it had never been raced/autocrossed/etc.
I had Acura replace everything....the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and the flywheel...then I told them I wanted all the old parts...so I know they did it. I havent had any problems since.
Edit: To make a long story short...after all the stories I have heard about the stock R clutch, I think it is ***. Although a few of the guys on here have ran theirs almost 60,000. Maybe some of us just got shitty clutches.

Every honda clutch Ive ever had has made that noise. Some worse than others. I will be getting a new clutch soon, but I wont be getting OEM.

isnt the ITR clutch the same part # as the Gs-r Clutch ....why havent i heard this problem regarding Gs-R's ....
I.E. ..i have the same kinda problem ....when the clutch is let out ...i can hear sort of a friction noise ..like something rubbing ....and the pedal engagement has become very high on the release ....
and it varies at times ...sometimes it will engage more low to the floor sometimes very high ...
my freind has about 105k on his Gs-R with the original OEM clutch ...and he beats it to **** ....
yet i only have about 20k on a new OEM clutch and it feels like **** ...again

I think some people have a "Monday morning or Friday afternoon" clutches. ie. assembled poorly. My stock clutch lasted 40,000 miles and when I took it out, it showed very little wear and seemed it could go for another 30K+ miles. I replaced it with another stock clutch and lighter flywheel.

Bingo.
I have ~54,000 miles on mine and when I looked at it at ~40,000 miles there was hardly any wear. I expect it to last till at least 80,000 miles before I take another look at it.
User input has a lot to do with drive train component life.

I must be really unlucky to have received three Friday afternoon clutches.

I wish I could blame it on that but I'm the type to not drag or rest my foot on the clutch pedal. After every shift, my foot's on the dead pedal until I have to shift again.

I got mine replaced aroudn 30K..., they replaces ur clutch under warranty.. lucky.. isn't that considered wear and tear?
Sounds odd. Could it be the tech(s) at the dealer you go didn't install the clutch properly? Any other reputable dealer(s) shops in your area?
You're in VA right? SgT?

My clutch at 80+K miles has been making that clicking sound for a long time (since 45K) I figured it was the clutch springs. The only difference is I have a GSR.

I agree, my stock clutch was acting up at 25k, and then finally at around 30-32k I had it replaced. Not with stock either. No problems since though and I'm fast approaching 50k.

Yeah, and the weird thing is, they haven't asked a lot of questions regarding how I drive the car. The only question I got was during my first warranty repair, the tech set me aside and asked me if I was drag racing the car, which I wasnt.

Warranty repair is free and unfortunately, SgT is not. If they replace my assembly again under warranty, I'm going ask them if I can watch the whole process.

it seems odd there is such a wide range of clutch lifes. i am going to have to cast my vote that it is user error that wears them out earlier. or more appropriatly put people driving being hard on the clutches. Now this doesnt mean your racing you car just not shifting in a way to maximize clutch life.
I am at about 50500 miles an i dont have any problems.
I dount there is a wide variety of quality in the assembly or manufacture of the clutches. They have pretty reasonable controls in place to prevent quality from differing that much between parts.

My first clutch did about 20,000miles and then the replacement OEM one lasted 1000miles. Great. It blew on the way to the track and had to be recovered on a lorry. When it went in to the dealer they just replaced it immediately and didnt ask anything. I asked to see it and it was torn apart. I think they may have fitted the wrong one...

i think Acura doesnt know how to replace their own damn clutches ...is what i think ....in my case the OEM clutch was just fine ......but my starter malfunctioned ....and broke some teeth on the flywheel ....while the transmission was out the dealer told me they would give me a special deal if i wanted to replace the clutch then .....that i wouldnt have to worry about it untill a long time .....got me a new OEM clutch for about 200+ ....with no cost for labor ...
the car had about 30k miles on it at the time ....
the clutch that was replaced was a bit scared ....from the the previous owner ..but still had some life .....(this is when the clutch pedal , and release point ever felt perfect)
since then with the new one .....its been nothing but problems .....with engagement point way to high ....trouble getting into gear sometimes ....the engagement point kept getting worse and worse ....of which i complained about from day one ...they told me it was normal ....its normal ...just needs time to get used to it .....
untill recently woulod not go into gear ....at ALL ...took it back ....they bleed it ...adjusted it .(even though they told me before it could not be adjusted)
now it still feels like crap ....and getting worse ...but of course they will blame it on me ......
cliffnotes : Acura doesnt know how to install their own clutches .......only clutch that felt right was the original one that was prolly installed by some little japanese dude back in JDMLand
