Default Undercarriage vibration

I searched through the archives and found a few things about the undercarriage vibration that some people have had. The one thing that they said was the cat heat shield rattled at 2400 rpm, but when I look at my automagic tach (in a stylish 94 EX) it says roughly 2000. Is the automagic tach that far off or is my problem not the same as other peoples? I just had the wheels rebalanced and that didn't solve the problem, so now I'm willing to try anything. I can't drive at 45 mph without that vibration making my drive to work a real pain.

I'd describe a loose heatshield as more of a tinny rattling sound. Not a vibration that you feel. And depending on how it's loose or bent, it can happen at other rpms.

Did you check your wheels & tires for out-of-round? If you had 'em balanced, the tech might not have looked for that if you didn't ask.

Got my wheels balanced again - and the lugs are on ok because they used a torque wrench and all that. Maybe it's just me but I think it's the worst just as it's changing from drive to overdrive. Like if you're floating around 2k and cruising and it wants to shift. So I'm thinking that maybe a mount of somekind or maybe my trans. A guy was telling me that I need my alignment done again.

transmissions do age and shift quality will degrade at some point in time... try changing the atf

It's got 135,000 on it - and compared to a few other 5th gens I've seen, my car is far from dead. I'll give a trans flush a shot.

I would definetly flush the tranny anyway.. u should do that since your car has so many miles on it. Your problem could very well be the synchros in your transmission.. and god lets hope not.

!!
I get a vibration w/ noise around 2000-2500 rpms, usually at very low speeds shifting from 1st to 2nd. It seems like it only happens when I shift slow and the RPMs fall too much. It sounds more like the heat-shield though, like something resonating with the vibration caused by the shift.

My car has 78k miles on it, so I doubt it would be the synchros going... but I do need a new clutch so maybe thats causing the vibration at low rpms..

the wierd thing about the vibration is that it doesn't really happen under acceleration. Usually just happens while I'm just cruising along. But today I noticed that while in neutral and park, if I rev the engine - at 2200 I get the same wierd vibration. doesn't happen below 2200 and doesn't happen over 2650. It's simply the wierdest thing.

I have had the same proble. The TSB on the rattle is that it is 1800-2200 . I had the same proble, 2.00 fix. Pipe clamps around the shield or just cut it off.. Hope this helps

Hate to sound so lame - but what exactly is the TSB and where do I find it to cut off the shield around it?

i have no idea what the TSB is, but have someone rev your car to 2200 rpm while your on the outside/under and see where exactly the rattle is coming from. you may not even need to cut it off, possibly just some loose bolts.

Hopefully it's a loose bolt or two - I hate the idea of doing weight reduction one heat shield at a time
