im sure that u can pass the actual tail pipe test if u have a good cat and ur motor is running correctly...problem is the visual test...der gonna know that the motor isnt suppose to be there...when they put in the #s the motor wont come back stolen since its JDM...if all smog equipment is hooked up the only problem is u sneaking it by as a 94 or newer USDM b16...like the ones from the del sols and 99-00 si...the motor stamping on ur block is different from urs which is from the JDM CRXs...best u can do i would say is hope u get a cool ref...oh by the way in order to get it done at any ol' smog station if u have a drop is to get it BAR stickered from the smog refs...after that no one can touch u...supposedly
Hmm...i have the same dilema...except i went and smogged it already...i passed visual...but the sniff....i failed miserably...i put...USDM Type R headers, factory type R intake, cam gears adjusted back to 0, factory exhaust, and random tech cat....still didn't pass...any ideas??
...jeez didnt pass huh...i take it u went to a ref station correct?...i would of guessed it had some thing to do with ur cat but since u have a new one....dunno...and u passed the visual so everything gotta be connected...so it could still be the type r cams thats causin the problem...but tell u the truth i really dont know...i have yet to attempt the smog yet...all i know is from what iv learned from others and this forum...try hybridhonda.com and search for smog refs...i believe there was a guy on der that also passed vissual but not tail pipe...and i do remember he solved the problem...im sure there also has to be someone here that knows...try the hybrid forum too....sorry if i wasnt much help...good luck tho
here i pulled some hints from that web site i posted earlier...
Hints:
#1 Pick your engine model and year. Its safest to pick the actual year of your engine, but regardless, the engine year you state must be the same year or newer than your car. For example, 95 Integra GSR, or 95 Del Sol VTEC, into a 88-95 Civic.
#2 Make sure your engine configuration and vacuum line configuration match the US Helms manual of the engine you claim to have. Nothing should be missing and everything should be as shown in the manual. And the locations of the parts need to be very close to the manual. In other words, if you are converting a 96 GSR engine to 95 spec, you must be certain you get all emissions parts right. If you have a Japanese engine, you still need to make sure the emissions parts and hoses match the US version you are smogging as.
#3 A receipt for your engine can smooth things over, if its a US engine.
#4 Make sure your car is running clean: new plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor. Good O2 sensor, and a good cat are essential.
#5 Don't bother trying to pass a stolen engine.
