OIL PUMP SHATTERED
For the second time in 10000 miles the oil pump gears break on my b16a fully built motor. The car revs to 8700 rpms and 18 psi, I was walking the cbr929 motorcycle and at well over 140 for about 15 second or more. I have an ls trans and custom speedo so 140 is easy prob even faster wasn't looking but my passenger said well over 140 next is 150. started at 60 mph in 3 went to 4 went 5. held 5 to about 7500 and heard a pop, looked at the gauge and saw no pressure. cut it down coasted about 8 miles. called aaa.. How do you get hp out of stock oil gears or afte market gears or external pump. need ideas. fast pulled the motor and giving to the machine shop for an examination and evaluation. maybe crank is destroyed due to crank bearings. no knock just metal scrapping. thanks.
sorry for your loss...I worry about that in the motor Im putting together...I was thinking about getting the prodrive gear, but almost every post about them people say the OEM gear is less prone to breaking than the prodrive, so I don't know what to believe.
Anyone have any insight on this?

I have never ever had any problems with my stock oil pump gear 330+hp.. (knocking on wood).. So my question to you is.. did you have you motor line bored when you had it built? I didn't but in case you did I wonder if in the process of lining the bore enough material was removed to sit the crank higher into the block.. Obviously it won't be noticable to the naked eye.. but my point is that it would put a stress on the oil pump gear. Just brain storming.
Well, you were in 5th gear WOT, 7500 rpms.... that's a lot of effing stress on the motor.
regardless;
i've blown 2 Oil Pumps in the past 2 months. Sucks big time. Luckily I have an oil pressure gauge, so the destruction was minimal, well not that minimal... (turbo blew first & second time, and the bearings went the first time). But it could've been a lot of worse.
Right now we are blaming the Civic Type R crank pulley I was running.
I replaced it with a stock GSR pulley, and a brand new GSR Oil Pump Housing, and a Prodrive Oil Pump gear.
It's only been a few days, so I have my fingers crossed it wasn't the whole motor that was improperly balanced & assembled. I'll find out soon I guess.
I guess 99% of the time, it is a balancing issue. It's rarely bad luck. Stock honda oil pumps have proven themselves in full blown race cars. So it shattered for a reason.
I went with a pro-drive gear since I decided I might as well.
But 5th gear WOT puts a whole lot of stress on your motor. I doubt that's the cause, but it sure as hell might contribute.
