Default B16 rex guys what do you think?

I took my 89 crx si with a pretty much stock B16a, mods in sig. I ran it at Cali. Speedway on july 12. My best time was a 15.313 @ 91.30 mph. I launched at 3k and dumped the clutch. Some of you guys have the same setup and run like mid 14's. what am i doing wrong, this was my first time at the track. any suggestions. I took out all the a/c crap, and spare tire. Is it worthwhile to take carpet and sound deadening mats out? Howcan I get a better launch. Any help is appreciated. THANKS. EF

First off, I dunno what kind of tired you're using, but you should launch higher. B16's don't have much for low end torque so you gotta keep the RPM's up. I launch around 5k or so, depending on track conditions. This is on 14" HX wheels with Azenis.

These launches show in your 60', which is basically a 2.4 Not too bad but in such a light car, could be much better, and thus, would deffinitely improve your ET. I pull consistant 2.2 60' in my hatch.

It all just takes seat time and practice. Drag racing isn't as easy as it looks. And you gotta be able to do it lots of time to figure out where to launch at and stuff. When I first got my swap, I ran a 14.9, and only once. The rest of the night it was 15's. Since then, all I've done are lighter wheels with Azenis, (I had Khumo's before) "Modified" my airbox and put in a K&N drop-in, and put in a lightweight battery. So most of it is seat time. If you wanna see the times drop, just keep going to the track. You'll see the times drop. I was dropping almost a 10th of a second every time I went. My currect time is in my sig. BTW, it's a 1st Gen B16.

Hope this helped..

when you say cali speedway, are you talking about palmdale? my best time is 14.9 @ 94mph. that track is shitty for two reasons:
1) it's 3000+ft above sealevel
2) the track starts to incline slightly about 1/4 of the way

go to fontana, i ran a 14.0 there...

You launch almost exactly how I do. Hold rpm at about 3-3.5k, then when the 3 yellows flash (Pro Tree) dump the clutch. After 2-3 tire revolutions I give 'er gas to prevent bogging or tirespin and if I do it right the tires hook right when power gets to them.

I usually net 60' times of about 2.2 or 2.3, on Mom n' Pop Special tires (Motomaster brand, if that means anything to you, which I doubt, since you don't have Canadian Tire where you are).

To me 91mph isn't very good and isn't indicative of good power output, but you have a dyno that says otherwise, so I'd have to say that what you need is seat time. I saw a steady improvement from low 15s in the 1/4 mile to where I am now (see sig) mainly through seat time over almost a year of practice. The time in my sig was run with stock ignition timing and both seats in place.

have you guys tried launching a bit higher? i usually launch about 4-4.5k and feather, not dump...i get a little spin, but my 60'ft times dropped to 2.2's (and one 2.1!)

Is it worthwhile to take out carpet and all the sound deadening stuff? Raene, i saw your run, how did you launch so quick, you were gone from the start, I launch at 3k, dump the clutch, pedal to the medal til i shift, it seems to bogg out untill i hit 2nd gear, any ideas?

I just launched how I told you. 3-3.5k, hold the throttle steady and dump the clutch until it starts to hook, then mat the gas and go!

If you hit the gas off the start while you're still spinning you'll just roast the tires (tire).

And that was hardly a good launch I think that was a 2.3s 60' time in that video. It just looked fast because the other guy didn't know what he was doing (BTW, that other CRX was a SOHC VTEC).

my car seems to bogg sometimes when i smash on the gas right at the green from a 3k launch. Do you feather the throttle cuz if i launch too much higher, i spin forever.

I don't hit the gas until it starts to grip. That means my foot does not move from when I start to stage until about 1 second after the clutch has engaged. And I don't just smash the gas because yeah, it'll bog. I roll into it hard, so that when it's at, say, 4k I give it about half throttle, 5k and up it's at WOT. It bogs otherwise.

This is why I say practice makes perfect. There's so many little things I don't even realize I'm doing until I think about it, and I only learned to do them through practice.

u also have azenis, which is a lot sticker than what most people in rex's are running, allowing you to dump higher w/ out hellish wheel spin
