HELP, Code 71 Cylinder Misfire
Car: 96 accord ex coupe (automatic)
Threw a code 71 I believe (7 long blinks, 1 short). The CEL has been on for a while. When I first checked it i thought i read a code 80 (EGR) and figured it wasn't that big of a deal. I didn't notice any performance decrease so I put it off
.
Recently I noticed my car hesitating around 2500 rpm. Makes a badabadabada sound until I give it more gas. Today I rechecked the CEL code and read the 71. Checked my spark plugs and all of them are blistered white (hot condition). Any ideas where I should start and what to check before I decide to take it to a shop?
I can do basic maintenance and pretty knowledgeable around the engine. I just don't have a lot of tools or the facility to do any major work on my own. Thanks for any suggestions

Going to try new plugs and wires tomorrow. I'm a little scared to try a valve adjustment by myself, i'm sure it's due though. thanks for the advice.
deffinately check the wires/plugs, also check the distributor cap, and make sure that the ignition system is working as it should be. If they are running hot, you may also try a slightly cooler range plug (one range colder). Also, are you running advanced or retarded timing?
No advanced or retarded timing. Engine is stock (just i/h/e). Replaced the plugs and wires and pcv valve yesterday and still have the same condition. Just waiting to see if the CEL comes on in a few miles. Any chance it could be a clogged fuel filter or injectors? It only makes the studdering sound when i'm light on the gas at 2500 rpm. If the fuel filter or injector(s) were bad wouldn't it bog at lower rpms too?

Thanks Gimpy. Forgive me I'm still learning. I did some research to learn waht the egr does. Clogged egr and ports sounds like the problem. Found a lot of EGR Block threads also. I am considering doing this. I guess I still need to have the EGR and ports cleaned (to remove the CEL) even if I block it? Also, read that this problem might be a recall issue, apparently it is common.
Man, being at work when you know your car needs some TLC sucks =!

yea it is most likly the egr....i fixed a 98 accord ex with the same problem...turned out to be the egr was blocked.....but in ur situation i would take that plate off and check all the ports...when they get cloged it will dump all the hot exhaust into one or two cylinders and cause a missfire. but if it was coding for a egr then it is probly that.
check the injectors. that was my problem when i threw a 71. the tip (cant think of the name right now) came off the injector and just sat a little further down so it shot a stream of fuel instead of misting
Update, I cleaned the EGR and ports on the IM. I couldn't believe how much carbon deposit was in the EGR and the ports. Only one port was partially open, the other three were totally clogged. Cleaned around the injectors too while the fuel rail was off.
Couldn't clean/check the EGR valve. I couldn't find my 1/4-inch 12mm socket
. Will do that and replace the EGR valve gasket tomorrow.
Anyway the hesitation is gone. Feels much better. Reset the ECU. Won't know if I'm totally done till tomorrow on the way home from work when the CEL would come on.
Thanks for the help guys
