Default adjusting valves!!

i adjusted my valves today and everything is put back together now. problem is that it wont start. i totally forgot to take out the spark plugs and distributer cap when i began adjusting. can that be the problem? also, the helms manual said use the feeler guage and there should be a slight tug for the correct adjustment. what's a slight tug?? slide pretty smoothly but kinda tugging it or you have to give it a little push sometimes to get it in there? i left it kinda snug. would that cause it to not start? i tried starting it a couple of times and i smell gas now so i would need to get it running on the next try. i have a 92 lude si. i just wanted to get the ticking noise out!!!

slight drag, as in it's not free to slide in and out. Pretty much you stick the feeler in, turn the screw until it STARTS to get hard to turn.. and hard is used loosely. When you pull the feeler out it should feel like it sorta wants to stick to the metal, as if your cam was a weak magnet.

MAKE SURE you tighten those nuts! If you don't have the tool the best thing I found was to use a 10MM 1/2 drive impact socket (or any other socket that size... 6 point is best) and the biggest allen key you can fit into the ball hole on the socket. With the 1/2" drive it's easy to get your screw driver down there, adjust the screw, and then use the allen key to tighten the socket. It's easiest if you have 2 ppl.

You don't have to remove the spark plugs, it just makes it ALOT easier to turn the engine to get to TDC.

did you have the engine in the right postion's when adjusting?

smelling gas sounds like the plugs are not firing.

wouldn't a wrench and screwdriver be easier?

so your suppose to adjust while the feeler guage is in ? ok i didn't do that. also, i was told not to turn the crank clockwise. well... i did.. but it was the first turn to get to TDC. that's it. would that affect it any? i remembered not to right after i was done with the 1 cylinder.

what do you mean by "did you have the engine in the right postion's when adjusting?" fastludeh22?
i didn't jack the car up and i aligned everything like helms said.
oh yea, can i have flooded the engine when trying to start it? i took out the plugs so wouldn't the gas just escape through the holes after a while? say 1 day?
any help would be appreciated

How much does this usually cost to have done by a pro?

I'm afraid to try mine on my own, and I know they need an adjustment.
