Check Engine Light w/ Test Pipe for OBD2?
I was wondering if anyone gets Check Engine Lights (CEL) for their Test Pipes on an OBD2 GSR? If you reset your ECU to get rid of your CEL, does it go away and eventually come back on?
Honda JDM headers were installed with the primary 02 sensor in the header. The secondary 02 sensor wasn't even in the Test Pipe, after a few miles the CEL went on. The secondary 02 sensory was then put into the Test Pipe in its factory position and the CEL was still on. Reseted the ECU, light disappeared and showed up again a few miles later. Any suggestions. It is a 98 GSR. 02 sensors are still in good condition.

yeah u cant run test pipes or gutted cats with obd2 unless u use a 02 simulator or jumper....or convert to obd1....u need secondary cat sensor readings in order for the ecu to read proper readings
there are numerous threads about this on here...search for 'em and you're bound to get what you're looking for. I have a test pipe on my 98 LS, and i've never thrown a code for it yet.
Yeah, I heard about the simulator and OBD1 conversion. Does the check engine light have any effect on performance? The cause of the light is because of the secondary 02 sensor, not the primary one?

not true. my brother has an obd2 integ and we ran a test pipe for over a year now. if the check engine cell bothers you then dont do it. but if you keep good care of your car and do regular engine checks then there shouldnt be a problem.
p.s. i've noticed that the check engine cell only comes on in the winter when the temp is cold. but once it started warming up the cell turned off.

it might depend on where u place ur o2 sensor...after u get ur test pipe back on...if u put it back in the stock position after the cat...then u might not have any codes...the reasone why that cel goes off is cause the cat sensor needs heat,,,and if u place it in the wrong position or totally eliminate it then ur gonna have a cel...it might also throw ur computer into limp mode....
hey guys lang time since i've been here. if you are getting a check engine light
1- your engine is running in "lame" mode
2- try replacing the o2 sensors- 9 out of 10 times the original o2 sensors aren't used to the temps of the test pipe and burn out. replacing them will fix your problem. the new o2 sensors are made out a more durable and faster reading material so your ecu won't throw a engine code.

For those who have Honda JDM Headers, the primary 02 sensor connects to the hole on the header and the secondary 02 sensor connects to end of the Test Pipe. OBD2 GSR's have 2 holes on the stock catalytic converter for both 02 sensors, instead of putting the primary 02 sensor in the catalytic converter, you will need to put it in the JDM header since there is a hole for it. The primary 02 sensor isn't in its original position because it is now connected to the JDM header, but it is very much close to it. The secondary 02 sensor is in its original position on the test pipe. The GSR is fairly new and I doubt the 02 sensors went bad.

This doesn't make sense to me...the LS has an O2 on the downpipe, before the cat, and the second O2 is on the back of the cat. Is that not the same ?

well i guess your car could be different...but my 98 GS...same thing as the LS and RS....one is on my downpipe of the exhaust, and the other is in the back of my (would be cat) testpipe.
I recenelty gutted my cat (obd2 97' gsr)...and I throw the light now and then. It doesnt seem to put me in limp mode hto, as i still have VTEC witht he light on? Idk its kinda wierd, I had my friend erase the code at a local Speedy shop or resetting the ECU will work but only for a short time.
that second O2 sensor shouldn't put your ECU into safe mode...it's only monitoring whether or not that cat is good or bad. it's not measuring the richness of the motor and compensating or anything like that
