Default sohc timing question. I cant get the light to light :-)

here is what I did I hooked the red wire to the +12 on the battery and the blackwire to the ground. Then I hooked the green wire to the sparkplug wire which closest to the flywheel because I pretty sure its #1. I jumped the service connecter under the glove compartment box. When I pull the trigger and point at the flywheel nothing happens. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Make sure the you're hooking up the wire on the spark plug wire correctly. Make sure it's wrapped around the #1 spark plug wire and not clamped down on it. Other than that, as long as u have power and ground it should be working.

If it's not an inductive pickup timing gun then that might be what that spring is for. It might clamp on top of the spark plug and then plug into the boot and the green wire clips to that. dunno

I had an old cheap gun that worked like that

does it hook directly to the spark plug wire to the spark plug or the spark plug wire and the distributor cap?

Mine hooked to the plug itself, I used it on a domestic though and it was really easy to get to the plug.

I really do not know if it will make a difference hooking it up the the distributor...I wouldn't think it would. A manual would really help you out right about now. :-/

Yeah, I had one like that too. You put the big end of the spring on top of the spark plug, in place of the plug wire. Then you put the plug wire onto the spring. Now you clamp the trigger wire of the light directly onto the spring. Don't loop it around & clamp to itself.

Since your plug is down in a hole in the valve cover, there might not be enough room to use that kind of light. Make sure it doesn't short to ground... Maybe you can make it fit at the distributor cap instead.
