Ignition timing adjustment, PLEASE HELP
Ok my minime is working ok, but it hesitates in low rpm, but hauls in higher rpms. My guess is it is the ignition timing, so im gonna try to fix it myself. I have an inductive timing light, and I was wondering if someone could help me with this. Here is the process my book says to follow:
1. Allow engine to warm up
2. Follow VECI procedures located under hood
3. Hook up light to number one spark plug wire (What? The end of the wire? Which end? also, what do the + - leads on the light go to?Battery?)
4. Locate pulley timing marks
5. Jump service connector
6. start engine at normal temp and point light at timing mark
7. The appropriate makr on the flywheel(?????) will appear stationary and be aligned with the pointer if timing is correct.
What I need to know: where all the leads on this light go, where is the makr on the FLYWHEEL, how do i look at the flywheel, i though it was inside of housing.

Hook the light to the #1 spark plug wire. It will snap or slide right over it.
Forget the flywheel marks....not needed on your engine.
Make sure no accessories are on, and I never jump the service connector either.
The +/- go to the battery.
You will be looking for the marks on the timing belt cover and the crank pulley

Crank marks
The right white mark is top dead zero.
The left white (or red) is stock 16* before top dead center.
See the Vee and the pointer just below it?
That's where you aim the light. And line the marks up with.

ok i follow, so the red mark shouldnt move if the timing mark shouldnt move? Also, is it imperative to follow VECI procedures?

I don't understand what you just said. No need to follow a whole procedure, just listen to us...lol.
If you set your gun at 0 degrees, then line up the timing belt cover marks with the red mark on crank pulley...this will be 16 degrees timing at idle.
If you set the gun at 12, 14, 16, or whatever you want, then line up the marks with the white mark on crank pulley

yeah sorry about that.. Ok, hood says it should be at 12, so tell me what to do. Do I need to line up the mark with a rachet on the crank, and then start the car? Let's make this simple, if someone could be kind enough to post the whole procedure, I would be thankful++++. Emirika just said line the gun up at 0deg. how do i know when its at 0? Someone please post the procedure from start to finish so my car can pull nice again.

Re: (turbotime)
if you have a gun with a **** on it make sure it is at zero. otherwise, if it is at any mark higher than zero you will be advancing your timing. if you have a simple timing gun the ndont worry about it.
the car has to be running and to adjust the timing you will have to loosen the bolts on your distributer. from there you will move the distributer foward or backwards while you monitor the marks with the timing gun. once you have it where you want it tighten the bolts and recheck the timing. (for correct timing the middle mark of the three should be lined up with the pointer on the timing belt cover)
