Default new 03 si break in: fuel question

ok. one thing that confuses me is fuel choice. my friend just told me that, when breaking in new cars, it is necessary to use a high octane fuel (ie. 91+). is this true? he also says, if i don't do so, after 50k mi. or so, there might be a higher chance of me getting detonation. any input regarding this fact or fiction heresay would be appreciated. thanx again h-t.

Just use whatever gas is recommended by the user manual, which should just be the lowest octane rating that will avoid knock, which is bad no matter how new the engine is.

wait, so it doesn't matter what octane rating you'd use in a new engine? it'll still knock?... so there's no way to avoid it?...

No, greater octane will prevent knock, but for instance if the car won't detonate on 91 octane then it's pointless to use 93. Also, using too high of an octane could hurt your engine by not letting it combust efficiently, but that's not nearly as bad as detonation. Plus, its cheaper.

The compression ratio in the new si isn't high enough to worry about knock with 87 octane thats why honda doesn't haven't recommended that you use 91+. If you use 87 it'll be fine.
