higher octane won't detonate quite as easily.

Depends on what your driving. GS-R's run well on 89. For turbo 91 or 93 is best

Higher octane means it has a higher resistance to knocking. Higher octane is good for cars with high compression ratios or boosted because they run the risk of autoignition. Also, cars with high mileage might benefit from using higher octane because they have more hydrocarbon build up. This buildup provides hot spots to
increase the chance of knock. Higher octane wont give you more horsepower because its still the same isooctane fuel, which has the same higher heating value.

Anyone else agree? 89 octane is okay in a GSR?

Haven't tried it yet, but in my old 88 5.0 if i didn't have 93 in it, it would knock like there was no tomorrow

92 is considered "high octane"

heres an article explaining a few things.. http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?OctaneIsControlNotPower

Im going to go ahead an disagree on that one. I beleive in the owners manual it actually says "Premium Unleaded ONLY"

Dont run 89 in a GSR. Get Premium (91+). Ive seen a couple situations of detonating b18c1s on 89 or 87. Hence the "Premium Unleaded Fuel Only" stamp.

Thanks. I bought my teggy used so no owner's manual. The tach says "premium" so I always run 92 or 93. I'd just heard from people here that 89 was okay. Now I know not to try it.

Someone else filled my '97 GSR with 89 octane. It ran like **** and my knock sensor got a workout.

The guy I bough the gsr I now own always use to put 94 and when I put 91 in and ruev it alot in the vtec 6-8000k I notice a little cunsumsion of oil... Since then, I now always put 94 like he did and I really have to give it a hard time to burn oil... It's now back to normal: 1 liter/3000 miles. It has 120k

gs/ls/rs integra's have lower compression they can survive on 89 octane.
Gsr/itr have higher compresssion engine which makes for the need for higher octane 91+ so detonation is lower.

look at the cost of regular, and premium. The difference is usually 20cents/gallon
.20x12gallons=$2.40 a tank
Is getting worse mileage worth not giving your car premium. You engine may nock. This will cause the computer to adjust for the lower octane, and hurt your gas mileage. I think I will pay the extra ~$2.50 a tank.

what is detonation

Higher octane burns more slowly and more controlled. Lower octane gas is more volitile. Any gasoline should burn at the same temp (unless it's knocking).
