Confused About These Things On My rebuild (Help)

Default Confused About These Things On My rebuild (Help)

Hey Guys I need some input on things. Yesterday I called RS Machine, man those guys are great, Mike and myself were talking for an hour *thank god I have long distance on my phone* He's Been building engines for 30 years, so I would take his word and recommendation in a heart beat. I just had these questions on my mind still.

My intended goal is a 300-350 whp car, that's daily driven. (inline pro mani and precision SC34 turbo probably)

I have a B16A2 that's getting RS Sleeves and Arias Pistons.


1. Mike Suggested I go to 83mm bore instead or 81mm (stock), to me this makes no difference, and I know I'll make gains from the bigger bore, but is there really anything wrong if I stay at 81mm?

2. I can't decide on 9:1 compression or 10:1. Mike suggested 10:1, in the sense that I'd loose power down low where 90% of my daily driving is done. I saw his point, but 9:1 to me is safer and less detonation prone.

3. Also I'm going to go with Manley Rods, he said that crowers ($600+ ones) are 100 grams more in weight and kinda heavy. Now Again something easy in my eyes turned into a rod discussion (which was cool). Any thoughts?

Anyone help me out? Im looking to send my block out this week.

1. Go with 83mm, your B16 will lvoe the extra displacement ( torque). You still have rooms to enlargen the bore in the future, 84, 84.5mm and etc

2. 10:1 It's your tuner's job to make sure your motor is safe and less prone to detonation. I ran 9.8:1 and would not go any lower...

3. Manley rods is the heaviest out of all that I know....crower weighted less that Manleys, Tony1 weighed them before and the manley is so heavy...Manley is at 517 grams each...I'll tell you what Crower is tmw

well with a bigger bore, you'll increase your displacement, and that will of course lead to more power, however, there isnt anything wrong w/ keeping the stock bore, you just wont make much torque . Is the reason you want to stay 81mm because you already have 81mm pistons? if thats the case, id just say keep it 81mm.

If you're only looking to make 300-350, 9:1 compression will be just fine. Of course you'll make more power w/ 10:1, but the margin of error when tuning is smaller w/ higher compression.

as for the rods go, i plan on using Pauter Rods for Luis' prelude, and those are even more heavy than Crower, they are just so beefy, i think they are worth it.

i'd go 83mm personally, more displacement off boost power etc.

10:1 with hondata tuning.

manley rods dont know much about them (outside of ford applications) but havent heard much bad.

I would go with 83mm bore.
10:1 compression. <- really depends on how good your tuner is. 9:1 is safer and more margin for error. Can you go with something inbetween (9.3:1-9.5:1)?

on the bore. 83mm. B16a's need some more displacement.

as for compression. its up to u. on pump gas, 9:1 will allow more boost and more power. 10:1 will be more peppy and make more power per psi, but you won't be able to push as much boost on pump. Compromise and go 9.5:1?

i definatly say 10:1. People often get confused and think 10:1 is high, but its actually mild compression I say. Look at all those succesful stock ITR's running 10.6:1 and making good power. Anything lower is for people who run things like FMU or AFC hacks. Just my 53 cents.

I have 84mm RS with 10:1 plus some head milling, coming in around 10.5-7:1. With all of the headwork and flywheel, I come off the line like an all motor car on steroids and by 5k the grin breaks out!

When I called about 2 years ago I asked for 9:1 pistons also, but ended up with 10:1. Definitely the better choice!
