Compression Suggestions....?
I'm in the process of building a b18c1 with 85mm bore, sleeved by RS. Anyways I purchased this block off of user: luckyracing, which from all his tech knowledge he shared with me and after hearing about some of the cars that he built, I decided to have him build my engine. Any of you guys know Max? anyways he is a cool guy, and seems pretty reputable. I'm deciding on pistons, not sure what to go with. I wanted to go with a 12.1 which he said is fine, and also note this car will be daily driver/weekend track car. What do you guys suggest?, I live in so cali and the highest octane we carry is 91. Your suggestions will be appreciated.
12.1 C/R is cool for pump gas. Max is a pretty good guy, it just sometimes he acts gay thats all. J/k max know what his doing you're going the right direction man
Yea 12.0:1 is fine for 91... My friend's new CRVTEC is sleeved to 85 and is running 13.5:1 but that's on a 104/92 50/50 mix... 13.0:1 is possible to tune on 92 up here in Oregon but it brings that tuning margin waaaay down.. You'll be fine with 12.0:1 and some tuning... My other friend's CRVTEC/EK has this setup... B20B bored .25mm over w/ stock sleeves, JE 12.0:1 slugs, stock rods, ARP rod bolts, Portflow GSR head, RC 310s, CTR IN cam (GSR EX), AEM FPR, SK2 IN manifold and sprockets, intake, JDM ITR header, ITR ECU, and VAFC... Only tuned by feel (never on the dyno) he ran a 12.62@107 in his full interior EK.. That was on 104 and 20 degrees of timing but his car drives just fine on the street w/ 92 at 12 degrees.. NO detonation there, and the car still goes okay... He's going to be dynoing it soon so we'll see what it makes with the CTR IN cam before he swaps them out for the JUN3's... About a year and a half ago my other friend had this exact same setup expect with the JUN3's (which shattered and blew up that motor) and that car made insane power... All the way up to ~8800.
Anyways it was our fault for that one.. It was running Portflow inners instead of the JUN linear progressive valvetrain... Oh well tho.. The 12.62 CRVTEC (Chan's) motor has been running fine for like 8 months now... Should be fine aslong as we use the JUN valvetrain... Sorry i went off but i was going to tell you that with the proper injectors/tuning you can get away with a VAFC.. I would go with Hondata or Speedpro if you have the money... Actually Chan's CRVTEC needs 370's we have the 310's at 100% DC and 60psi of FP.. So i would probably go with 370's on ur setup.. Should work perfect... Good Luck... Peace

thanks man...did your friend chan's b20 ever blow a head gasket, because I have seen people complaining on h-t about head gaskets blowing on 84.5+ mm
Nope it's never has and it's just an OE one... I've had more problems with Cometic's and other aftermarket ones.. Just getting a seal with them is a bit harder... On the big bore turbo motors that my friend and I build we have no choice but to go with Cometics.... Oh well tho.. That's the one good thing about slightly overbored NA motors.. hehehe Latez
I dont know how good your gas is in the U S A BUT IN canada with our 92 octane
you cant run more than 10:1 without detonation.

Maybe 10:1 is a little low. I would say nothing over 11:1 on pump gas best. I could be wrong but, yOu will have to take all of the timing out of it or do some kind of long rod set up to prevent detonation at 12:1 on pump gas. My expierience with compresion ratios is based on a totally different head design though (push rods+ 2 valves). That may make a lot of difference.
Damn that sucks if the Canadian 92 is that bad... What do they do, load it up with ethanol? Like I said my friend runs 12.0:1 in his CRVTEC and all we gotta do is pull sometiming (back down to 12 degrees which is low but the car still strong) On 92 and 12 degrees of timing he can still run consistent 12.90's but we haven't done any better than that... So if 10.0:1 is the best you can run up in Canada then you can't even run a STOCK ITR motor without pulling timing huh... That sucks... Here you can probably run ~11.5:1 and keep your timing at 16 degrees with the proper tuning... ie VAFC or Hondata/injectors, just something like that.. That's good to know tho.. Peace
