if it cracked by itself u more lickely broke the differential pin...
wich needs a new rebuild or a new tranny...

WHAT BOLT WHERE u taking in or out??
the fill hole??
thats a 17mm wrench u need....
and good lukc welding on aluminum and getting no leaks....
since i have worked on trannies... if the crack goes tru the whole casing,, be carefull that any of the insides are moving a lot... the internals are critical and tight and need no free movement...

I never use power tools for any torqueing on the car, just use a torque wrench. Or even loosening any bolts, i'd rather use a pipe for an extension then strip and damage. Just have your friend figure it out since he messed it up, pay for it or whatever. . Take a picture and ask a mechanic.

well u could aluminum weld it. You need to use argon gas, and get aluminum wire. Me and my friend did mine, when the car was hit and broke the rear motor mount braket and took the trany casing with it. Its still holding so if you know how to weld pretty good it should hold. Just make sure it doesn't like. I say try it and see what happens.
