Default Is a lightweight flywheel really worth it?

I have a fairly built NA setup. Forged pistons and rods, 11:1 compression custom 400 lift cam. Currently I'm putting 186 to the ground. It's fun now, but sometimes I wonder if I might be able to free up another 5 hp or so by going to a lighter flywheel. With the cam I'm running, the engine really doesn't start making power until 3500 but once it does, it pulls all the way to redline which is currently 8100. Thoughts? Suggestions?

This is what i think since it has a less rotational mass the engine wont have to stress as much to turn it and it will rev quicker. As long as your not spinning your tires im sure the quicker revs will net you faster times.

Flywheels do not make any horsepower.

If you like accelerating faster, then buy one.

Oh and what cams do you have that are 400 lift?

I've got a JUN ultra light... I love it. I love the throttle response I get from it. Remeber, less rotational mass makes for a faster car. There was a formula in SCC a while back that showed how to compute mass reduced from the fly to convert it to lbs off the car.

I'd never go back to stock. I wish I had my clutch and flywheel upgrade sooner. I absolutely love it. I actually wish I could run a lighter flywheel. There such thing as like a 4lb flywheel? lol

Yes it does make it lighter meaning that it rotates with less force meaning it makes it easier to rev the motor faster but ....

Doesnt it also make you lose Torque?

Before I added an aftermarket lightened flywheel, I was making a little less peak power than you, and noticed big difference with the new flywheel. The revs move much quicker. I'm currently using an AASCO 9lb'er

I'm on an 8lbs flywheel and like it. My car stalls out sometimes if I push the clutch in too fast and let the revs drop all the way down.

No..however it may feel that way because of the loss of momentum you get from the heavy stock flywheel
