18 degrees ignition timing... but ecu changes it...?
ok so i am replacing the timing belt water pump etc... and i want to sett the timing at 18.. because that is suppose to give you the best performance... etc for a b18c1... correct me if i am wrong.. but i hear that the ecu will automatically change the timing of the car... well how the hell do i set it on 18 with out the ecu changing it in a few days.. how do i get around this.. someone please explain?
you have to short the pin under the dash... search for timing adjustment, should be some pics. This can be done w/ a paperclip, its also in the helms manual.
yes, if you engine sense a knock caused by advancing your timing it will electrically retard it. but you can trick the ecu to take the advanced timing by jumping the service plug. and then do your timing. then the ecu will think what ever your new time is stock timing

Yep

This i'm not sure of, but i dont think i remember seeing a reference to that in the helms (dont have mine w/ me).

Since you short the ECU to set the timing and its the physical location of the distributor that will be what you use to set the timing i'd say no, unplugging hte battery wont reset timing.

the thing is if you dont short that plug and do timing, then the computer will keep retarding the timing as you advance. Now if you short it, when you advance the time, the ecu will no compensate. thus if you want 18 you get 18.

18 degrees wont cause knock. unless you use really shitty gas.

FYI... what you're talking about is base timing. i.e. at idle and fully warmed up. The computer will adjust actual timing depending on engine load, throttle position, and a bunch of other things.
