Default Why not get a VTec?

I've been reading the forums and it seems a lot of people are spending a lot of time and money fooling around with engines that came with their Integras (etc) . Here in Hiroshima where I've been living for a few years, I'm driving a 92 Integra (DA6) Vtec - 170hp. Is it really so hard or expensive to get these lovely JDM engines over your way? They are prettty cheap over here...

Jim

Welcome to board! I'm down on the Rock in Okinawa. VTEC motors are plentiful in the US nowadays but LSVTEC and CRVTEC motors have proven to be more affordable while making gobs of torque.

Well from what I have heard and researched, there are a number of reasons why many of us stick with the engines that come with our cars.

Just a few........
The JDM engine you speak of may not be emissions legal where that person lives,

It might be technically illegal to swap that engine into a particular car,

It might be actually more expensive to import that engine than to find a slightly used engine of the same type that came with his or her car,

And there are many more reasons that I can't think of right now.

welcome to HT, to answer your q's directly, its not hard to get JDM motors here in the US but theyre kind of pricey depending on what you get. It's more the cost of getting them here than anything else. Since all the motors have around 30k mi on them, thats pretty new so theyre priced that way. another issue is the emmisions test with JDM motors. but than again any turbo'd motor wont pass emmisions so it's just a matter of knowing someone that'll pass it for you.

Its like anything else thats imported. the imported cost you pay will always be higher than the cost of that item/good sold in the country its imported from. its sorta like US made products/cars sold overseas..theyre more expensive overseas than they are here for us. same as cars/motors for u guys in japan.
