Default opinion on an all-motor setup.....

call me crazy, but i'm axing the turbo kit and going all motor(i'll probably switch back--just need something different)and i'm stuck on whether or not to stay ls or go ls/vtec...i'm planning on a 84.5mm bore with around 12:1 compression..here's the problem--is it worth it to ditch the ls head(which already has crower double springs/ti. retainers and a port and polish) and spend the extra 1000-1500 or so for a vtec head/pr3 or pw0/and cams, springs, retainers??any opinions welcome....

That depends on if you think you can drag more power out of it. I'm assuming you have aftermarket/stronger rods, so if the LS head doesn't have problems revving 9K+ then it should be all-right. I would still consider a VTEC head just because the cam selection is a bit better (Toda Spec C's *hint* *hint*), and an LSVTEC setup starts you off with more power.

All depends on how you want to do it. There's respect in being a damn fast B18b non-vtec all-motor monster. I'd respect that.

Why ditch a perfectly good head. Why would you think there is a difference between a fully done LS head and a fully done VTEC head?

yea,we got 93 octane everywhere..and sunoco has 94...and the farm and home next door to the shop has 108 leaded,so i'm not worried about that.....i'm thinking of staying with the ls head--i don't wanna spend the extra money for vtec, even if it will make a few more ponies......i have a golden eagle sleeved block with crower rods and je's in it now...so boring out to 84.5mm and reving up to about 8500 shouldn't be a problem..only thing i'm worried about is rocker arms--the ball and socket style ls rockers wear out valve guides a lot quicker than the vtec shaft rockers, and i hear the ls ones tend to pop out at high rpm's--say 9k or so--but i'm not planning on reving that high.and i don't think there is an ls cam out there that wil make power up to that point, except maybe a crower custom grind

Go with what has proven to work, the VTEC, port and polish head, and you'll be making mad power. Throw some JUN 3's and say hello to 9.2 grand shifts.
