Using a cam gear on a d-series is really a waste. You cannot dial out overlap since you cannot adjust the intake or exhaust specifically. Your best bet is to purchase a turbo specific camshaft. I recieve the s22 ef-1.com for a d-series a few weeks ago, beatiful casting and the specs look to be very promising. Only the dyno will tell the story on this cam though.
A waste? You can still adjust power band. It's very nice to be able to retard cam timing and gain high rpm power. Also, most aftermarket cams make best results after being tuned with a cam gear.
i see so maybe a combination of cam and cam gear...sounds good....that turbo cam u bought wouldnt need upgraded valvetrain right...but if i did wanna upgrade my head i would probably do both for the hell of it...anyone recomend a cam gear??? i will probably go with skunk2's turbo camshaft when they release it....
Definitely go with a cam that's designed for turbo, or else you'll lose power because of overlap. This is a fact. Even with Vtech you have to be careful that you don't engage it too early because the overlap will kill your HP.

Old HatchBlack had a Skunk2 cam gear on his d series engine he said it made a very noticeable improvement I believe he said a good setting was 3... HTH

I didnt really find that much gain in using a cam gear on the d-series, the powerband was shifted around but that is nothing you couldnt do with a properly designed aftermarket camshaft. I personally just leave the cam settings alone, enough power can be made without touching the cam settings.
Your very correct. I always try to tell everyone that you cannot directly compare your engine with another persons that made X horsepower, and Y torque. Altitude, temperature and other ambient factors always play a significant role in how much power/torque and engine will make, and how it will respond.
well i liek to have something to tune with when im on the dyno...i have the afc hack and can only mess with the fuel as of now...i will fully build my head and block but was just wondering is the cam gear even a good choice because i cant really tune to make great power...should i just opt for a skunk2 turbo camshaft and stock cam gear or just get the cam gear with the intention of using it for minor adjustments down the road
I noticed a difference with mine. Although I have mine advanced and it seems to be better that way. If I set it back to -0- I can feel a loss of power.
This is on a boosted D15B7.

Um why ? I believe a Cam gear will make a noticable difference with the power delivery my tuner also does. I'll post up how I go sure to do testing on the dyno so can compare before and after results.
