Default How do I tell which engine my roomate has in his '94 del Sol?

Let me start out by saying I know virtually nothing about Hondas, so <U>ANY</U> info will help my cause. My roomate just bought a '94 del Sol. He swears it is a Si, but the badges are all removed. It sure doesn't feel like an Si when I ride with him, but I really don't know and he still swears it has the D16Y. Is there any sure fire way to tell (other than popping the hood, since he won't let me look) which engine he has: like where it redlines or the fact that there is no A/C????? Any help to put him in his place would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Open the hood, and look at the engine code......

Check the engine code...you can tell if its a S or SI from a VTEC model, because the VTEC model came with the DOHC VTEC engine (b16) and it is very differnt from a SOHC VTEC engine. Also, the S has the spark plug wires in the bottom of the valve cover and the SI has them in the top (I believe) good luck man!

Ask him what the **** is problem is and why he wont look at his engine bay...Then proceed to bitch slap him and pop the hood..J/K

If it is a 94 then it should not have a D16Yanything in it. Maybe a D16Z6..Not really sure about the redline thing....

Here you go if he doesn't have ac it is an S if it doesn't redline at 7200 or higher it is an S if it doesn't have cruise control it is a S so go check that stuff

Yea the delsol's came with B16, D16Z6, or D15B7 (i think thats it). If you can't pop the hood, then write down his VIN... it should be visible from the corner of the windshield near the driver's side. Run it through carfax. It will bring up basic info about the car... I can't remember exactly, but I know that it will give you name and grade of car, engine type, among other info... and it is free. I beleive the DelSol S had the D15, the Si - D16 and VTEC - B16 (but like I mentioned above it should say 1.5 Liter SOHC, 1.6 Liter SOHC, or 1.6 Liter DOHC

You say it has no A/C?? Hmmm... I wonder if it would be a D15B7, and if the Si's came with factory A/C... however this is total speculation (it could even be a canadian model, so who knows?), so just run the VIN!

A surefire way to tell...rear brakes should be disc if the car is in fact an Si. If the car is a S though, it will be drums in the rear. Also, the Si will rev higher and has cruise control, as someone else said.

Si will be slow
vtec will be faster but still slow
Check for rear disk brakes.
the si should redline at 7,250rpm while the del sol vtec will redline at 8,200rpm.
If it has no tach i can guarantee it has the d15b7
del sol s came with the 102hp d15b7 engine 1.5ltr sohc non-vtec
the del sol si came with the d16z6 125hp sohc 1.6 ltr vtec engine
the del sold vtec came with the dohc b16a3 160hp engine.
the si and vtec should have disk brakes while the s should have drum brakes (rear). the s will have no tach.

It is a 94...therefore there is no possibility the car has a B16a unless he did a swap. There was no VTEC model until the 95 models.

94 was the first year for the VTEC b16 models FYI. Some SI's came w/ out A/C but very few. The Si's and VTEC's came with fat spoke alloy wheels and the s models came with hubcabs w/ steelies. The s models redline at around 6500 and the si's redline at 7200. Theres more I can think of if you need me to get into them...

that's funny. I guess the dealer did a swap in my 94 and riced it up with a DOHC VTEC sticker to make it 'look' like a vtec model.

if you check his vin badge, look for the code EG6
the vin will read as following
JHM???14*RS etc etc..

-JHM=Japan Honda Motors
-question marks would reveal his model
EG1 = D15B7 or EH6 = D16Z6 and if he was lucky EG2 = B16A3
-1 = body type ((1=2dr. conv./5spd. OR 2=2dr. conv./4spd))
-4 = vehicle grade/series (4=S, 6=Si, 7=dohc vtec)
-R = Model Year (R=1994)
-S = factory code (S=Suzuka Factory in Japan.. real JDM)

So if it were an Si as he claims it would read JHMEH6?6*RS
hope this solves your argument..
now tell him to cut you a fatty steak mmm
