Howto Identify the Engine type in a Del Sol
I think this one is a 94 Del Sol. It's got a 16V Engine, but I don't know much else. I don't think it's a VTEC. It just says 16 Valve and HONDA under 16 valve.
Any ideas? Is there a place on the engine with the engine model code on it or anything? It's a regular Del Sol...I don't think they had an Si Model, but it's not an Si if so.
Thanks for any help.

the engine code is stamped on the front of the block. if it says D16Z6 it's a SOHC VTEC so it would be a Del Sol Si. i'm not sure what the other engine code is... probably D15?? it's definitely not the Del Sol VTEC (B16) from the sound of it.
you probably have a Del Sol S.

My 94 Del Sol Si says vtec on the valve cover. Another way to check is to look @ the exaust pipe, if is has real tiny exhaust on it it is a S, of if the redline does not got to 7200 rpms then it is an S modle

Yep the 94 Del Sol Si & VTEC models had VTEC stamped on the valve cover. Only the S didn't. Also check the rear brakes, the Si & VTEC's had disks and the S had rear drums.

Re: Howto Identify the Engine type in a Del Sol (Solracer)
If you're under the hood, look for the engine code as noted above. Its stamped at the lower front left of the block. D15XX is an "S" model, SOHC non-VTEC. D16Z6 is an "Si" model, SOHC VTEC and B16A3 is a "VTEC" model, DOHC VTEC.
You can also look at the valve cover. If there's a plug wire cover, its a B16A3. If the plug wires are at the front, then its a D16Z6. Toward the rear and its a D15XX.
Redline at 8200=B16A3, 7200=D16Z6, 6800=D15XX
Rear drum brakes="S" model.
HTH!

It's stamped on the block, on the left, (when standing in front of the car). The
easiest way: SOHC non-Vtec=plug wires at the REAR of the valve cover; SOHC
Vtec=plugs in front; Vtec(B16s)=plug wires in the middle, (probably covered with
some "cheesy" aftermarket APC-type "cover" ).
EDIT: Also, didn't Honda NOT offer the B-16 Vtec model 'til '95? Not sure on that,
but I know it was "held back" for a while.

Re: Howto Identify the Engine type in a Del Sol (Otis)
Well, thanks for reposting EXACTLY what I said in the post above.
Anyway, FYI, Honda brought the del Sol VTEC (B16A3) into the US in 1994. That year didn't have ABS as far as I know. The S and Si models came over in 1993. Japan and Europe had them in 92. Dunno about the rest of the world.....of course they're still CRX's over there.....

Thanx Peoples
The car is wrecked. It was my sister's. The insurance has already paid her for it and she's keeping the car, so I called dibs on the motor and Tranny. I might be able to do something with it. I think it is just the S model. I'll check everything out when I get to Dad's tonight. Thanks again for the assistance.
It definately doesn't say VTEC on the valve cover (bummer huh )

1993 Del Sol Si with a SOHC VTEC D16Z6 motor will NOT even say "VTEC" on the valvecover, so all isn't lost yet.
Just look at the block code man - takes 5 minutes.
I also understand that you think it's a 1994, but in case it's a 1993 then it could still be the VTEc without even saying it on the valvecover.
1992-1993 VTEC Civics don't say it either - same exact motor.

Here's what the block code plate looks like. Well, not yours, but similar...
It's in the front passenger side, above the clutch slave cylinder...

Yes, but in those 5 minutes, Tom can tell you the part number for every nut and bolt, what other chassis they can be used in, and their weights!!
Sorry, couldn't resist!

Yup, it's my baby's heart on an engine stand...
If it were a tranny case, I'd say it were for my triple-disc carbon-carbon-carbon clutch... I wish!
