Default Pistons carbon build up question.. clean before install??

Hey i just picked up some used pistons and they have a lot of carbon build up on them. Do I need to clean that buildup off before installing?? if so, can i just use engine degreaser and a rag?? ive heard i shouldnt use steel wool.. sorry if this is a n00b question.. but i have exercised the search option and no luck. TIA!

Definately clean them, engine degreaser is fine.
Red scotchbright pad works good.
