Gutting my catalytic converter.....HELP !

Posts: n/a
I want to gut my converter, and I had a few questions about it:
1. What is the difference between an OBD1 and an OBD2 catalytic converter ?
2. Will this affect the car negatively in any way ?
3. How much HP will I gain ?
4. Can I do it myself , and if so...how ??
Thanks in adavnce for your input ....

1. OBD1 catalytic converter does not accomodate a secondary o2 sensor like an OBD2 cat does.
2. You will be emitting harmful gases into the atmosphere and you will smell the fumes when you are at WOT for a few seconds or more.
3. IMO, none. My test pipe and my 2.5" hi flow cat made the same power on the dyno. sounded the same, same hp/tq, only difference was the smell.
4. You can do it yourself. I have never done it, but you can find out from someone on here how to do it. I'm sure the catalyst material can be broken up with a long screwdriver or something similar.
I personally wouldn't do it.

If you want a test pipe, buy/make one.
It's not expensive.
It does not make sense to knowingly destroy something as expensive as an OEM cat.

good point, i have also heard that people lose HP when gutting a stock cat as the air does not flow thru as well. no first hand knowledge though

I must have been smelling too many fumes in my car at lunch today.
I swear Reid wrote something about getting a free high in his post above.
Damn mods.

Despite what people say I gutted mine.

Yes, it made a difference believe it or not. At high rpms..
BTW, I'm OBD1. Don't even think about it if you're OBD2.
EDIT: buying a used cat isn't expensive, especially here on H-T. A guy on here a while back sold his ITR cat for 35$... (I know because he owed the money to me
)

I can see getting a straight pipe or even a high-flow cat.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I think it's useless to talk about that little theory among honda drivers untill someone can prove it. In my case, I feel that I gained a little power at high rpms.
Of course.. only a dyno will show the truth. Maybe I've lose some power somewhere else in the powerband.. but as far as I can tell it's done good. I like it.

Why are there now two posts to the other (much more useless) thread on this same topic???
