Gutting my catalytic converter....HELP !!
Guest
Posts: n/a
I want to gut my converter, and I had a few questions about it:
1. What is the difference between an OBD1 and an OBD2 catalytic converter ?
2. Will this affect the car negatively in any way ?
3. How much HP will I gain ?
4. Can I do it myself , and if so...how ??
Thanks in adavnce for your input ....

1. None that I'm aware of besides having an O2 bung in the OBD2.
2. It will throw a check engine light due to having no catalytic material anymore.
3. Not sure exactly how much HP, it'll be a couple at least. But it really depends on your mods.
4. Yes you can do it yourself. It's not always easy though. Basically you take like a long screwdriver and hammer the catalytic material out.
Personally, for the time it is going to take you to do this, I'd buy a test pipe. They are inexpensive.

i belive its gonna affect ur car in a negative way my freind has a 00 si obd2...he gutted his cat and he has i/h/piping....its threw alot of codes including all cylinders misfiring....ur cat sensor is gonna pick up too much pressure and not know how much fuel to add to all that air....u need to get a o2 simulator or just get a hi flow cat...

#2..will a carsound throw a code also...being that there is no catalyitc material or is there minimal material still in a high flow...sorry for the thread jack but i thought its a decent question..

the carsound wont throw a code...it still has inlet and outlet material...just less of it...so a lil more air flows through....the difference is like 1 hp if that.....plus it wont polute out beautifull air..... as much

Gutting your cat will throw a code. But it will only throw ONE code.

The "cat sensor" (correctly labeled the 02 sensor) does not read pressure. The A/F ratio is not gotten from the 2nd 02 sensor, but the 1st, which is before the catalytic converter. You don't need an 02 simulator unless you don't want to deal with having a check engine light all the time. It has no affect on the car or performance as it is just telling you to replace the cat.

******* noob, just leave and off your self. You have to be a ******* moron to gut your cat, or to run a test pipe. Woah, few free horepower really worth the damage to the enviroment? Just buy something else to make more power. Stop ruining the world that others live in.
to you for being so ******* stupid. JUST LEAVE

ragejed: I agree that you shouldn't run a test pipe or gutted cat. But he wasn't asking that and you have no idea whether he actually drives his car on the street. It may be a track only car. Either way chill the fawk out and have a
Ohhh, So cars on a track dont pollute? news to me.. I am chill, I just hate that people need to gain a few HP on the cost of other. In this case, the enviroment. Just spend the money, and get a high flow cat.

d00d what are you talking about??? You didn't know what you were talking about earlier, and you probably have no clue now. I would love to hear your technical explanation as to why your 02 sensor is going to burn out?

probably the same reason why ur tailpipe gets black....and doooood my freind has already accomplished it....it might not happen to everyone....but it happened to him..so in closing....if ur gonna do something do it rite....dont cut corners...for one hp

y0 mang, my bad fo dissin' on y0 homies ride. He bez rite.
You are sofa king we todd did. "The same reason why ur tailpipe gets black" ROTFLMAO. Your tailpipe can get black whether or not your cat is gutted. I think it's funny how ragejed is calling the maker of this thread the noob, when in actuality you are the we todd did n00b.

I can see this thread is getting out of hand already...
Eclipse Spanker, welcome to HT. You got your answers for the most part.
I wouldnt gut the cat. I would get a Carsound. If youre going to do it, do it right. I wouldnt ruin the stock cat that you can sell, it wont help much in terms of performance, and Ive *heard of* gutted cats resulting in damaged 02 sensors. Never experienced it, but I have seen peoples 02 sensors subsequently fail after running a test pipe or gutted cat.
Good luck.
