forgive me for the ignorance ( ) but what is the difference between the two???

short block is everything from the oil pan to the headgasket

long block is everything from the oil pan to the valve cover

Confirmed, but you can get more detailed and say longblock includes dizzy, manifolds, etc.

short block is just the lower part of the motor with the oil pan sometimes. long block is basically the whole motor sometimes with intake/exhaust manifold and distributor.
