I have a '99 GSR sedan. engine mods are:
'00 ITR Cams
Skunk2 Cam Gears (0,0)
Comptech TIG 4-2-1 Header
GReddy SP Exhaust
DIY Icebox Intake
VAFC
I have had my VTEC set to 4900 since i installed the cams in November. Reason for this is to compromise for the 5400 ITR VTEC point and the 4400 GSR point. To be more specific, it's set at 4900 on and 4700 off (using the VAFC).
Now, the car has had no problem going into VTEC and out at that point, and the car runs fine. I rarely hit redline in my car; I don't drive that aggressively anymore, and i usually go to about 6 or 7K and shift just for fun when i'm bored. A while ago, though, I decided to have fun and on a freeway onramp in 2nd, hit 8100, shifted to 3rd, hit 7600 and into 4th then 5th, and my CEL came on. I stopped and checked the code and got 22, which is VTEC System Malfunction. I reset my ECU and started the car and it was fine from that point on.
Fast forward to today, I was trying to get on the freeway quick so i went up to ~7500 in 2nd, shifted to 3rd and saw the needle go to around ~5300. Suddenly I felt the car drop in power and the revs stopped at 6000. I was in limp mode. I looked and my CEL had turned on. I did the normal reset and restart and the car is fine now. The code was 22 again.
Why is my car throwing code 22 like this? I don't drive the car hard, and it usually goes in and out of VTEC fine unless, as it seems, i push the car close to or to redline. I'm getting frustrated because it is discouraging me from pushing to 8100. Anyone have an idea?

Exact same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago!!! I rechecked all the connections. I had the blue wire tapped into the VTM signal wire insted of just connecting it and capping off the other end.. I reset the ecu viola 2 weeks later no problems.. Check connections and instructions again.. hope it helps..

I got the same problem on my 2000 Honda Si. I had a shop put in my VAFC, I noticed after I got the car my IDLE dropped to around 650-700 rpm! Anyways, I redlined it one day, my engine check line went on, I couldn't hit VTEC. I resetted the ecu, but the same thing happned when I try to redline 2 weeks later. I had autozone to do a diagnostics, it read PCM immoblizer.....anyways, my Honda mechanic said with that code "you're car won't start", but car runs fine, but I couldn't hit VTEC! Anyways, my car runs fine now, I had the shop that put it in look at it. They said everything looked fine, they replaced a couple wires. It could be a wiring issue, I redline fine now! Did you have it hooked up at a shop? Cause sometimes with VAFC you're cars computer doesn't read it right, maybe a wire connected wrong or needs to be replaced.

check the connections (esp the wire that taps into the vtec line) and make sure 100% that everything is connected and connected properly..
when i had the vafc, one of the connections came loose and the car woudln't even start
