Is there a spill-proof way to change oil filter?
yeah ... you gotta turn the car off while doing it or the oil goes everywhere ...
the way i do it is drain the oil then do the oil filter oil will spill on the back but just use a rag to wipe it off then re attach the new oil filter

what I did was cut the bottom off an oil bottle, and it's just about the size of the filter as well, you just hold it up to the rim of the filter and most of the oil is caught in the oil bottle. Works pretty well.

funny you should ask this. This is one problem that has plauged me ever since i started working on my car, and i think i have it figured out.
I always drain the oil pan first, and then replace the drain plug.
Then, unscrew the oil filter just enough to let the oil start flowing out. (about 1 turn). Catch this in a drain pan.
Now remove the filter, as it will be less than half full of oil and if you turn it slow and don't turn it upside down, it should be fairly mess-free.

dang, and i thought there was a unique way or tool that i could use to take the oil filter off without causing spills... oh wells...
does anyone know of a car that has a vertical oil filter... as in attaching it vertically so when u take it off there is no spill at all cause the oil goes to the bottom of the filter?! jus a thought...

I think the vertical filter setup on the v6 is even worse.

That's the way they are. I don't like them because they spill oil all over the place. Alot worse than the i4 IMO.

I agree with you. The reason upright filters spill worse is because there is not and angle and the oil comes out all the way around the filter rather than on just one side. I Just use a rag and wipe as the filter starts to leak.
true, the old Land Cruisers used to have it this way (F, 2F and 3F engines) but the opening used to be in the lower part, it made a mess as well, it will make a mess in any direction, but the best ones are like our honda's because u can change them without getting oil in your hands
just my $.02
just my $.02
I gotta try the cut up oil bottle trick. I just changed my oil on Thursday, and having hot oil dripping down your hand is not fun. Ah well, I'll try to remember during the next 3000k miles.
There was a guy in the prelude forum that had a great idea...
He loosened the filter a lttle bit (before the oil starts coming out) then he placed a ziplock bag over the filter and loosened it the rest of the way. The bag caught the oil and then he just zipped it shut. Then wipe off the few remaining drops...

i work at a lube shop and what i do is drain the oil pan first, then just loosen the filter and let the oil run down, when it's drained, grab a rag and take the filter off and very little oil should spill out. Works for me.

What I do, I take the oil cap off the valve cover, then I drain the oil from the pan. I wait till it has all drained and then I take the oil filter off. I haven't spilled oil on the rear of the engine since I started to do it this way. Then I slap the new oil filter on and the drain plug, and whoalah!
Have you ever looked into oil filter relocation kits? That way you don't have to get under the car to change it and you can change the way the filter sits (upside down) so you don't even spill any oil. Greddy makes them but I don't know if they have them for accords.

Holy SH*T!... that's what i need... dayem, that's tight! Freakin $160 for the civic application, didn't see one for accord though...

If you guys are complaining about the mess that removing the oil filter causes (ie: oil running down the side of the block, axle and etc) then just poke a hole near the end of the filter with a screwdriver or drill a small hole with a cordless drill........works for me and there is less of a mess.
