Default How can I prevent oil from spilling out the filter while changing oil?? !

What do I need to do while changing my oil to prevent oil from spilling out of the filter when unscrewing it? Things ive tried, letting my car sit overnight before changing my oil, changing my oil while its still warm, letting the pan drain for 40 minutes. Do I need to drain it, then lower the angle so it will drain out of the oil filter?

Oil filters have an anti-drainback valve inside to keep oil in the filter so that it's not dried out when you start the engine after sitting for many hours. It's because of that valve that oil comes out of the filter when you take it off, no way to avoid it.

Yup, esp for an Integra.

For my 3000gt, it was cool because the filter was sitting upside down

What's weird is that my old Camry had the filter on the front of the block w/ the filter inlet angled downwards, yet it never spilled any oil when I would remove it.

best way to do it is drain oil out completely, and when pulling filter off, hold it upright fast, but still no way to avoid oil spilling out, yet sometimes i dont get very messy if your quick when pulling off the filter

stick a screwdriver or punch through the lowest point of the filter with a catch pan under it, let it drain, then take it off.

True... but you can get a filter off without spilling a drop. 87 rx-7 every oil change never spilled a drop out the filter. It was like the guy with the 300gt upside down.

hmm I could buy 2 boxes of those for about the same price as 1 pair of Mechanix gloves, and I go through a pair of those just about every year.

Any idea if those are sold in retail stores?

No, I do not know who stocks them. I can not even find an official website for GatorSkin to see if they have a list or retailers.

On the other hand, I have ordered them from Amazon twice without issue.

Depending on the kind of integra you have.
You can shove your arm behind the IM and get to the filter from the top, so loosen from the bottom then spin it off from the top and let it drop down into the oil pan.

It's harder to do this on a Gs-R motor due to the intake manifold, but it can still be done.

Yeah but oil still spills down all over the exhaust header, half shaft axle and bearing, engine block, etc. and you still have to wipe it all up.

When I'm underneath the car I just get over as far as I can towards the passenger side wheel and still reach the filter (w/o burning my hand on the hot catalytic converter or header), and have my oil drain pan positioned underneath the filter. There might be a couple of drops of oil splash onto my old shirt, but it's no big deal.

EXACTLY. If you don't wanna mess you have to do it the next day or let your car sit all day. I remember when I used to change the oil while it was warm, cuz thats what everyone says, I used to get oil all over the block, me, ground, etc. I used to get so pissed, I kept saying why the expletive did honda put the filter sideways. But then i changed it one morning cold and the filter came out with NO mess. And thats the only way I do it now............ no need for a half a can of brake cleaner to clean the back of the block anymore!!!!
