Can you change the oil filter without draining the oil?
On a B18C1, can you change the filter without having to drain the oil out of the block? I'm not sure where the oil level is in relation to the filter. Anyone have first-hand knowledge?
Thanks!
Thanks!
yes u can because all the oil is in the pan but some oil will come out when u change the filter. just like when u change ur oil how some oil comes out.

my only 2 cents are if you do it ...change the filter when the engine is cold...like its been sitting for more then 8 hrs. so minimal oil will come out.

yep...just pour a bit into the new filter to make up for it, and then check your oil level.

i wouoldnt do that, the filter sits at an angle facing downward. all the oil would pour out. put a new filter on, put some oil around the filter gasket before installing, then add 1/2 qt. of oil to crankcase.

no no.....i know that......but i always pour some in the filter to prevent a dry run. i know you can't pour a lot. that's why i suggested pouring some in the filter, then checking the oil level (and topping off if needed).

No disrespect but why not just change the oil then your not spilling oil all over your block. But there are times when some of us dont have the cash.
I just had to do something similar to this. Mine was leaking so I took it off and put it back on again, so you can do it.

oil (especially synthetic) will go a lot longer than the typical 3000 mile change (of course depending on how you drive). it's the filter that gets clogged up and starts to become useless.

mobil 1 filter and amsoil 5w30 regular synthetic oil
lasts for 10,000 (granny driven) miles and 7,500 (autoxing) miles no burnt oil
and 25,000 miles with 10w40 racing formula oil
and it costs almost same as mobil1
I have never seen such a good oil and for facts

yikes I could never ever go for a whole year w/o changing my oil. Lately I've been changing it every 4-6 weeks (3K miles).
change it first thing in the morning, and you will be fine, I did mine last week, not a drop of oil came out of the filter, car had sat for over 12 hrs

Like the man says, let it sit overnight on a level driveway or garage. Pull the filter out in the morning and you won't see a single drop of oil !! I do this all the time to prevent oil spills in my garage.
