Need advice clutch/tranny related
Just put my tranny up after FD, CM stg 3, cm flywheel install. I bled the clutch slave until air stoped coming out and more. Filled tranny with 2.3 quarts of honda MTF. Once i got the shifter linkage and everything else bolted up i noticed the shifter is very very stiff. Its almost imposible to get it into gear. Once you do get it into gear, 1st to second isnt that bad (still not normal )but 2nd to 3rd just wont go in unless you just keep trying it over and over it will finaly slip in. what should I check? I am going back to work on it tomorrow and need some advice on what to check. Also the clutch pedal doesnt feel as stiff as i thought it should but continueous bleeding of the slave cylinder doesnt seem to do anything.

FD? Final drive, is that what you meant?
It takes (I'd say) a mile or so to get the tranny lubricated again after you've had it all apart and dry. Or have you been driving it...
Otherwise.. you might have some clutch problem.

ok guys. I just double checked the tranny fluid and there was LOTS in there. As soon as i opened the filler plug tranny fluid started coming out. But when i start the car and try to get it into gear all it does is GRINDS. so they symptoms are:
1) Really hard to get into gears when car is off
2) wont go into gear when car is running, only grinds.

Bad/Stuck pressure plate or throw out bearing. Could also be the clutch slave. Try removing the dust cover and see if the fork moves when you push the clutch.

If its hard to shift while the car is not running and won't shift at all while it is running, then i'm about 95% sure your pressure plate is not releaseing your clutch. Perhaps a spring broke or something?
EDIT: Also what pressure plate/clutch were u running before? Perhaps your clutch was adjusted to work with an Execdy and now that you put something else on, the slave does not travel far enough to release the clutch.
Only other thing is maybe you put the gears together wrong when you replaced the counter shaft, but I'd think it would not go into gear at all if that was the case.
Did you have any problems with the FD install? Putting the case back together? Did your try to shift the tranny before putting it back in the car?

Not really as the dogs aren't lined up for every gear and it needs rotation of the engine so the syncros align the dogs/shift ring. When we shift a tranny when its off the car, we have to spin the input/main shaft in order to get it to go into some gears. You can however do it with out spinning the shaft, but it is very hard and doesn't always want to go into gear. Plus its not too good for the tranny to be doing that.
EDIT: For thouse that say you can shift fine with the engine running and the clutch pressed down, well the main shaft is still spinning a little and stops once its put in gear. Ever seen a car off the ground in neutral? The tires will usually still spin, however they are spinning slow and you can stop them with your hand.

THe clutch is a CM stg 3. I did not do the FD install, I took it to shop that has done numerous FD installs before. THen I put the clutch and flywheel on myself.

Another thing i think i should mention is my clutch slave cylinder kinda poped apart. I put it back together and bled it over and over. THe clutch pedal still doesnt seem to stiff. However it does go all the way up by itself and the car does not stall.
Like I said, it sounds like the clutch is not releasing. Try this, turn the car off, put it in 1st and push the clutch in. See if you can push the car, if not, then the clutch is not releasing. This will help you slim down what exactly the problem is (clutch or tranny). If you can push the car and the clutch down and in 1st gear then its something in your tranny.

ok im gonna go check if it rolls in 1st with the clutch down. I already know that the fork does move when i press down the clutch.
thanks for the help.
thanks for the help.
Then the clutch is not releasing. Not sure how to trouble shoot that exactly. Try adjusting the clutch to push the throw out bearing farther perhaps?
Ok time to bump this back up for more sugestions. Adjusted the clutch pedal and still have the same problem. Took the tranny back off. Release bearing was installed properly and no visible signs of a problem with the presure plate or clutch disk. There must be something wrong with my tranny since it is almost imposible to move the shifter when the car is off.
you didn't leave any tools inside the tranny right?
I don't think you did, but never hurts to mention..
Take it all apart again I guess. You could have possibly screwed up the shifting mechanism and it won't move the forks properly. I doubt it though..
When it's apart, hold the tops of the shift forks and shift the rod with a screwdriver in the bitch-pin hole. If there's oil on everything don't worry about hurting it..
ACTUALLY, take the case off and take a couple pictures for honda-tech. There are people here who can spot a problem on anything (sometimes even if there isn't one...).
