Removing ps belt only?
I'm thinking about removing just my ps belt to see whether or not I can live w/o it. Any ill effects to just removing the belt? In theory I'm planning on taking the belt off for a few weeks and either removing the system/looping the lines or putting the belt back on but chances are I'll end up running just w/o the belt for six months. Can this damage my car? TIA

I can confirm this....

I haven't had my power steering belt on for over a year. It is really only a pain at super low speeds (less than 2-3mph I would say). If you have crappy tires, as in soft sidewalls, the effort will be even more, but since I don't I'm not bothered by it. People that drive my car complain and when someone two drivered my car at an auto-x event they were shocked I didn't put it back on but I've gotten use to it so I don't notice. I say got for it. Its not like it is hard to put back on.
hardly notice a difference while driving over 5mph. under 5mph such as when pulling into and out of parking spaces or drive ways, you have to muscle it somewhat. once i removed the ps belt, believe it or not you will notice a difference in the way the car feels, better response and a little more on the butt dyno. since then i removed my whole ps system and wouldnt think of putting it back in.
Why would I need to loop the lines if the pump is still in place? I only removed the belt not the pump.
Car feels like a car w/o ps, so far I'm enjoying it

If you take it off, you'll want to loop the P/S rack and throw the P/S system away.

My thoughts exactly, except my system is still sitting in my garage (what can I say, I save everything

There are obviously a number of ways to accomplish this. I took the less complex/expensive route and simply installed a fitting at the rack and formed a reasonably sized loop with a T in the middle that could be capped-off after filling. I left some space in the loop (i.e. didn't fill the rack/loop completely to the top) to allow for some expansion and comprssion. End result was exactly what I wanted, and best of all, the total cost was only around $15.

If your'e gonna take off the belt, at least drain the fluid from the system - it will make it ALOT easier to turn and park. Obviously putting in a loop / breather system is the best solution, but some of us might want to leave the system in place for street or winter driving...
