Default Air Conditioning

Its starting to warm up here in arizona. I havent used my air conditioner in probably 4 or 5 months, but as you can imagine summers here are horrible, and it just sucks without air conditioning. I tried it a week ago for a minute or two with no luck, it was blowing hot air nice and strong. I said eh, and moved on. I heard that it needs 5 minutes to cool down, so I tried, but nothing. I had my air on for a good 15 minutes coming home with no change in temperature. I;m not sure what to do i looked i the book and made sure i had everything right and i did. The manual also mentions you should always take your air conditioner to a dealer. Well i know that will be expensive becuase either way they will find something wrong. Is there somewhere i can check my freon level, or whatever they use? or do some kind of test of any sort?? lemme know, thats a lot

the recharge kits for 134a are usually around 20 to 30 bucks. That includes the oil and the 134a in a can. How old is your car when was the last time anything was done to your a/c unit.
Perhaps it might be better if you take it to a ca shop and pay the to totally evacuate the system, check for leaks, and recharge.

If I were you, id just take it to a shop, and do all the stuff i posted above. That way, u know the refrigerant is all new, and u will be shivering in 40 degree a/c. At least thats what my toyota tacoma xcab hits. I never recharged it yet but its still freezing. Yours might be already dead or might have a leak. Take it and get it done right the first time.

my 96 gsr does the same thing, took it in, all it needs is some freeon, lowest quote i got for free on charge, was 90 bucks, seems worth it to me.

i just asked this guy that works behind my work at the firestone, and he said 120 bucks. i dunno if its even worth it. he did this thing i thoguht was weird, a test where he unplugged something to do with the air conditiong, and inserted a paperclip to it to close the circuit or sumthing, and then i heard the engine go faster, like i was to turn the air on, and then he undid it after ten seconds and it went back to normal, it sounded like the air was gonna work or something then. Does anyone know what that test is and what it shows? thanks

Could be a bunch of things, but here's my guess...

There's a low-pressure switch in the AC system; so if the refrigerant pressure is low, it prevents it from running. Maybe he jumpered that switch to see if the compressor would run. Seeing that it did, he probably said that you were just low on refrigerant.

i had the same problem u are having awhile ago. for me however my cai was rubbing against the ac lines in the engine bay and it broke the line. i took it to a shop and they welded it back together. so if u have an intake check under it and see if anything is rubbing against it.
