i have a d16z6. do i have to take the head off to do this?

Yes you will have to disassemble the entire head,(ie remove the cam and valvetrain)

you will have to take the head off and completely take it apart. Plus the seal should be pressed in by a machine shop.

Don't you have to heat up the head and chill the valve seals to get them in, similar to installing piston and rod wrist pins?

I think you are talking about the actual valve guides and the original poster it talking about valve stem seals.

Valve seals can be removed and installed with the head on the car. It requires compressed air, a rail type spring compressor, valve stem seal remover, and installer. Dealers do it this way all the time. If you try it without the right tools, it's very difficult. Or, you can pull the head.

Plenty of info in the archives..... but you can't search them right now.

Valve guides are an entirely different story.
