Default Valve Adjustment

Ok it's the first time I have pulled off the valve cover since acquiring my Type R in December. Now I am pissed, because I was able to fit .009 on my intake side. That's far past the .003-.005 the manual says it should be. I intend to tighten them, but is there anything else I should check for wear that may be causing this? I know that if the valves get too tight they will damage the seats, but are there any serious effects from having them too loose, besides a loss in performance, such as burning valves, etc?

Thanks,

Matt

Does the wheel have to be off to turn the crankshaft?

No it doesnt. Just turn your steering wheel as fart left as it will go and you should have enough space to get a rachet in there.

Yeah i took it off cause i thought it would be a pain in the *** to do it with a big wheel in the way. But i dunno, i have never tried it with the wheel on, maybe i'll do that next time.

if you guys are having a hard time cranking the crankshaft, you can just take out the sparkplugs beforehand. makes it much easier as the 'compression' is lost through the sparkplug holes.

quick question: how much of a difference would .002 in. make power wise? How often should you check your valve clearances?

service manual says to inspect every 15k miles or so and adjust as necessary. make sure that the engine is cold when checking and adjusting.
