You do not necessarily need the computer.
Hondata can reflash your existing computer with a program that is better then the stock ITR program.
See http://www.hondata.com/k20arelease.html for details

You should be able to retain the stock axles.
Would it be cheaper to put a k20a head on the a3, upgrade the pistons, swap for a type r tranny?

it would be cheaper, but wouldn't necessarily be comparable. the k20R head revs much higher than what the a3 block could safely support. this topic has actually been beaten to hell on this board if u search a little bit. redstone motors in mountain view, ca had a couple k20a's for sale with everything you need for a great price... i'd reccomend them, good peoples too. if you don't want to spend the money to get the k20a, don't half step it, just get a k20a2 or even a k24a2 and you'll be much happier than you would be if you added all those parts to the a3 block.

You might actually be going overboard. Your USDM EP3 already has the Type R axle ratio and good gear ratios in the transmission.
Maybe you should just get an LSD and forget the six speed.
