If there really is forty thousand on the engine, and the compression looks good, I say to stay on a college budget for a while, save up some money while you drive a reliable car around, and then once you have three grand put away, do an LS B18A1 swap, if you read about the swap in the time you save the money, then it will work out fine and you wont have to pay for labor, just rent an engine hoist.

The B18A1 swap will end up costing right at two grand if you get it out of a junkyear with ninty or a hundred thousand miles, make sure there is a warrenty on the motor in case you get one with bad compression, try to get a motor out of an automatic, they are treated better.

That also leavs a thousand dollars in your wallet, money is a good thing.

id say keep your stock 40k motor over a zc, granted the zc would have a bit more power but not worth the trouble of swaping a motor and not to mention having to buy one.
id put money into your single slam motor and just make it decently quick. id imagine your not shooting for 13s. so id shoot for some 14s. the quick and cheap ways are bottle, cam and milded head, pistons, or just gutting the **** out of it.

derek

Alright so I got 2 choices save up for b18. or hit up my SI engine.. I could do either But i Don't wanna stay on a budget and wait a year before i can start goin fast.. I wanna hit low- mid 14's?? The idea of a fast SOHC is nice too buy ya know.. was thinkin sohc Vtech swap w/ juice and maybe a clutch and some weight reduction.. let me know what else i'd be looking at

if the engine is fine, keep it and maybe check into a turbo... don't expend the money on a ZC it won't be much of a difference at all...
if you wanna go the swap route go with the b18 like said before...

custom turbo would be cheapest fastest way to go. http://www.homemadeturbo.com

btw, its vtec not vtech.

and if you swap the motor i'd be interested in your stock motor.

get a cam ($225), get a valve train package if you can afford it ($425), header- $200-$400, chipped ecu from hyperduck ($35), plus P&P or whatever else you can afford. my a6 rebuild is about to start. if you wanted to you can also get d16a1 pistons from an 89 teg ($270 + machine work to install). there are quite a few options. keep teh a6

springs, retainers, etc. - it allows you to safely rev past teh redline (once you get a chipped ecu that removes the rev limiter). If you get a cam you will eventually want a valve train package as quite a few cams make power beyond teh factory red line & w/ a factory rev limiter you may not see the full potential.
