Fans turn on SOMETIMES at idle.....why?
95 GSR
10,000 mile old radiator and cap
new thermo fan switch
50/50 mix coolant and water
1000 mile old FAL fan
I put a voltmeter on the contacts of the radiator fan, and it read 14 volts (car was relatively warm). The motor works perfectly fine, and turns on to cool the coolant. For some reason, as it was at idle, the fan did not turn on and the car was overheating very much so.
why the hell did the fan turn on one time and not another, and why did my car overheat when it was at idle? It was not on the turbo timer, it was on via my key in the ignition. Car doesnt overheat under load or 7psi of boost either.
I cant figure out why the fan would turn on one time and not another, and why it overheat at idle after a short drive and a little boost.
Any help would be appreciated, I thought I fixed this problem but apparantly not.

Sounds to me like your fan motor is shot, sometimes you can hit them and they'll turn back on.Replace your fan motor and you should be good
Its an almost brand new FAl fan. Do you mean shot as in it wont work at all, or wont work sometimes? As mentioned above, the fan motor is indeed good and spins without any hesitation.
maybe thermostat needs to be replaced?
MAYBE the switch is bad, defective or something......
Also- I think i might just be an idiot and not hear the fan turned on. I have come up with a theory that makes sense. If my water pump was bad or had bent impellers, it wouldnt circulate the coolant well enough huh. THAT would explain why the car was overheating in the first place at idle. Looks like I will be getting a new water pump soon, might as well retorque the headstuds while I am at it.
sunconsciously forgot about waterpump, probably because I dont feel like doing that.
possibly. I wonder what the %defects of those switches is.
