Smoke out of exhaust when downshifting?????
I have a garrett T3 off a volvo on my del sol. It runs fine, but every now and then when i down shift to a stop, it will put out a little smoke....Enough to see in my rearview for a sec then it goes away. Smells bad too.
It doesnt smoke under a hard load at full boost. That says its not the seals right?
No oil in charge pipes or anything. What would cause this???? Its hard to tell what color the smoke is but maybe gray.

Its probably the seals. Just because you dont have oil in the charge piping, doesnt mean anything because the exhaust side seals could be bad. Actually, the exhaust side seals generally tend to go bad first. Basically leaking oil directly into the exhaust wheel.
When you decellerate the vacuum in your intake manifold is the highest at this point. With that said, Oil will seep pass the valve stem seals and into the intake manifold..and then burnt in the cylinder...this is probably your cause since its only doing it when you downshift
I'm having a simular problem.
Mine happens mostly when exiting the freeway. When exiting i usually downshift to 4th then third to slow down. Well once i put in third (strong vacuum the whole time because it's in gear) if i step on the gas to accelerate i can get a nice puff of smoke (oil) but goes away after a second. Under hard acceleration there is no smoke. I was thinking that it was maybe the valve guides but after talking to my mechanice he said to check the pcv valve (to make sure it works), but he also said it sounds like the rings are going bad. My car was runing extreemly rich for a while so he believes that the fuel may have washed the cylinder walls causing excessive wear. But this is all oppinion because the engine has not been closely inspected it tested. (leak down test was done a while back 3-4%) but that will only tell if the compression rings are bad not the oild rings.
anyways something for you to look into.
BTW it did this when i used the same turbo as you (saab t3) and still now with the new garrett t3t4 so i know it's not my oil seals in the turbo.
check the inside of your dp to see if there are signs of oild leaking into the exhaust, you will be able to tell. Check for a crack in the exhaust housing too

hmmm...well i know its something with the turbo because...... I rebuilt the entire motor not too long ago...the valve stem seal were new....I just put this T3 on like 2 weeks ago and it started doing that....before i ran a T3/T4 and has no probs with smoke at all..
