cam gear question

Default cam gear question

i need some info on cam gears-- will a adj cam gear off a 96-00ex fit the 92-95 ex engines. thx for the help

yes it will fit but they are 5 degrees off from each other.

so is the degrees off in advance or retard??---and will this mess up my timing if i were to replace the timing belt

My understanding was that the cam gears are the same from 88-00. The 5-6deg difference between the 92-95 and 96-00 is in the cam itself. So swapping the cam gear is fine. However if you swap the camshaft itself, then you have to adjust for the difference.

thanks , its just that i had a p&p head put in with a zex cam and skunk2 cam gear and my engine is reading compression of 110 115 105 110--so the timing is probabaly off

those numbers seem low for a compression test did u do the test right. what i mean is did u have your foot on the gas while u were cold cranking it

i actually had another mechanic look at my car the throttle was wide open--they also advanced the cam gear 2 degrees and compression was up to 150 in all cylinders--they tell me the timing is off a tooth--back to the original mechanic i go

the 88-95 cam gear is the same, but the 96-00 is 5 degrees(or about a half-tooth) off, which is the reason you have to use a z6 cam gear to put a z6 cam in a y8.
this is a cam gear for a y8 notice the UP mark is between two teeth(red arrow). on a z6 cam gear the UP mark is in the middle of the actual tooth (blue line). notice how the gear is advanced 5 deg. to match up to the z6 Up mark.
