Default cam gear

ok i was just wondering about the importance of the adjustable cam gears? what does it do for you i know it don't give you horsepower right? how is that that by puting the bolts on the cam in a spot increases or decreses timing i don't understand the adjustable cam gears someone asked me about them today and i was offically stumped can you give me a hand on this thanks guys

All it does is allows you to alter cam timing events.

IN a SOHC it allows you to shift the powerband up/down

IN dohc it allows you to do this, plus adjust overlap
