Default A6 Rebuild question

OK, I searched on this, but didn't see what I needed. I am going to be buying an A6 next week to rebuild. I want to use the 89 D16A1 pistions, should I get the whole pistion set like the rings, and wrist pins & connecting rods for the teg as well, or should I get those parts for teh A6? and should I get the .5 oversized pistons since this is a rebuild?

i would use the a6 rods, but i am not sure if the a1 rods have the same length as the a6 rods. the a6 rods should def. work, though.

i would personally get new oversized pistons. this way the cylinder walls are fresh and with a clean hone on them. you will need to get new rings when you get the oversized pistons.

you might need new wrist pins as well to press the a1 pistons onto the a6 rods.

hth.

thanks breaka, I figured if no one else jumped in you would. I'll just get teh a1 pistons, and all new a6 rings, rods, and connecting pins. I appreciate the help my man. along the same lines, do you know what an average price would be for honing & hot tanking the block + installation of teh piston set?

i would get piston rings for the a1 pistons since you are using those pistons. rods, wrist pins, bearings should all be for the a6 motor.

speaking of bearings, you might want to try ACL bearings. i have heard a bunch of good things about them. rocket on this board sells them so you might want to contact him.

hot tank and honing might be $100 or so (kind of guessing here).

do you want the pistons installed in the block or just the pistons pressed onto the rods?

maybe another $50 - $100 on top of what i said. so maybe $200 max for the block to get hot tanked, bored, honed and the rods pressed onto the pistons...

this is all a guesstimate. call up a few shops for pricing...

yea, you won't be held to it, I am just trying to figure out teh costs for everything since I will be buying another a6 next week most likely. so other than the whole piston set, i should need headgasket (y8?) fuel pump, & then teh general maintanence stuff right? i already have a new water pump, starter, dizzy, alternator. i should be good w/ all of that right? a cam & valvetrain will also be forthcoming.

A Y8(96-00) or Z6(92-95) head gasket will bump your compression by aproximately .2. They both use the MLS style gasket instead of the fiber material that the A6's use.

With A1 pistons and a Z6/Y8 headgasket your A6 will have about 11:1 compression. 93 octane only baby

Nah, just which year matters. 86-87 will give you a tad lower c/r than the 88-89's
