Is this a good speaker?
So I got a deal for $85 for this Sony speaker and here is the spec:
6 1/2" HOP woofer cone: A proprietary Sony speaker cone material which combines high strength; low weight; and low resonance resulting in improved transient response; higher power handling; and flatter frequency response
2" Metal Midrange
1" PEI Balanced-Dome Tweeter
Built-in 2-way passive crossover: A component or circuit used to divide the audio signal into specific frequency bands
200 Watts Maximum Input Power (50W RMS)
High Compliance rubber surround
Aluminum Die-cast Frame: A speaker basket constructed from aluminum (for strength & high damping) using casting production techniques
Gold Plated binding posts
4 ohm voice coil
Sensitivity: 90 dB/W/m
Frequency Response: 30 - 28000 Hz
Weight: 1;180 g (2 lbs. 10 oz.) per speaker
Dimensions: 6 1/2" x 2 1/2"
Built-in 2-way passive crossover: A component or circuit used to divide the audio signal into specific frequency bands
What's a built in 2 wy passive crossover? I am very new to this so please help. Are they the same as those cross over component where there are two mid ranger speakers plus two tweater? Anyone has experience with this speaker?
I want to put it in the front and just use a lower cost at the rear, will it improve the sound qualifty?
Thanks
Thank you very much for all the response!! You guys are great!!
Yes, just $85 included tax for a pair. I use a Sony CDX-MP70 without any amp, is that not a good idea? I just want something better than stock, not real high level component. So, do I need an amp??

No, you do not need a seperate amplifier. Using a seperate amp would provide you with more clean, full bodied sound. But it is certainly not a necessity. Like you said, your not looking for anything real high level. What you have will be vastly better than stock.

There's a seller on Ebay called caraudiowarehouse that sells Eclipse 6.5" coaxs brand new for $53 a pair. They're not the best in the world but they sound alot better than Sony's speakers. But yes, if you can spare $125 you can get MB Quart reference. They will knock your socks off. MB Quarts are among the best. I would totally pass on the Sonys there are better deals out there.
With that headunit they should do alright. The headunit amps are pretty strong these days. It'll be loud anyway. Best thing would be to encase the back of the speaker completely.
Yeah i agree sony for the car is junk. Sony tv's and home accessories are good. If you want a head unit go with alpine, kenwood, or pioneer imo. Speakers i like infinity's.
Might be repetitive, but yea Sony isnt't the best. But anyways, since you bought components you should get an amp to run them because you will get better sound out of them. You might not be looking for the greatest sound, but that is why you have sony's right? So for the price you bougth them for, good deal! If you ever are looking at upgrading and want decent speakers, I would go for Boston Pro Series. Other good speakers are MB Quart, Infinity Perfects, and Alpine's Type-R and Type-X series. Happy listening
my objection to sony speakers would i guess mostly be with the metalic tweeter components... the highs sound very tin-ey to me, and I don't like that. the infinity reference, for example, uses the silk and they sound much more smooth and natural.
